Unhappy Acceleration Performance Reduced - Turtle

Hi All,
A couple of days ago on the motorway the car popped up a message basically saying that performance was reduced with a symbol of a turtle in the driver display. I noticed that the electric motor was no longer working and that the gauge showing the electric charge was slightly different.
The petrol engine was still working but with no assist from the electric. Still driveable but not as "perky" as before. I pulled over at the next service, restarted the car and all was well.
Yesterday the same error happened again, even with a full charge from cold it would not engage the electric motors. I had to drive to Manchester, which I did and in one of the frequent traffic jams I did restart the car and the error went away..for a while.
When I got to Manchester I used VOC to get some-one out who thought it was a Turbo issue (why that would cut the electric rather than the ICE I don't know but a few forums seemed to indicate that's what it could be in a Diesel or Petrol variant).
Today I got a call from the Volvo dealer looking at the car who said that the battery had an issue and needed to be replaced at a cost of £22000! They were contacting Volvo for more information. Given that the car is around 9 months old I am not too impressed.

Anyone ever come across this issue? There are a few reports on the net but they usually go away by themselves in the T8.

I don’t believe he did Mis type, those batteries are mighty expensive from what I’ve heard! You don’t want to be buying one second hand without a warranty that is for sure!

It cannot cost £22,000. Either the dealer is mistaken or Volvo has just come up with a notional cost. The battery warranty is 7(?) years, iirc.

Look at it another way, the extra cost of a T8 over a T6 is ~£9k and for that you get all the extra electrics, electronics, motor/alternator, fuel heater, etc, as well as the drive battery. Now, unless Volvo is making a huge loss on every T8 they sell (or a massive profit on every T6) the numbers simply do not add up.

Lithium batteries are expensive but nothing like £22k. Mitsubishi sell their PHEV for the same price as the diesel equivalent. That tells you something.

You can get a new Nissan Leaf battery for that with the car thrown in free. I will be glad when they all get real with Electric cars so we can just get on with it.

I had something very similar - several months ago.

It turned out to be the BCM, Battery Control Module. There were a batch of these BCM that were buggy, and needed replacing. It took my dealership several attempts to diagnose, with support from Volvo UK and Sweden.

Once they replaced the BCM (but not the battery), everything has been perfect.

Had a call from the dealer, they mentioned the £22000 figure several times! Partly because I would have preferred to take the car to my local dealer I suspect and they didn't want me to move the car. They told me it was undriveable and I reminded them that I had driven 80 miles up the motorway with the error. It only occurred to me afterwards that the reason they didn't want me to take it is probably because my car is in bits.
Apparently a cell has died in the battery and a Volvo tech from Daventry has to come and replace it.

I hope that they have diagnosed it correctly, the loan S90 is not a patch on it's highly spec'd big brother!

It would be interesting to ask Volvo UK in writing (c.c. a selection of the UK motoring press) to either confirm or deny that a replacement battery is £22k.

I have just ordered a T8 XC60 and discussed the battery replacement cost with the dealer beforehand. I was told £12500.

I wonder how much of it is labour to get the old one out and fit the new one.
