I've only driven the 2.5 10V and the T5, but the T5 wins for me everytime. The 10V is a lovely smooth engine and I bought my 850 after a long trip in the 2.5, but being able to have the extra oomph with no discernable difference in MPG (if you're sensible) made it something of a no brainer for me.
ps. I hope you don't mind but I edited your poll slightly to change the 2.3T option to 2.3 T5 just to avoid any confusion |

I was thinking the T5 but then i thought you have higher ins plus higher mpg if you use it as a turbo which im sure you would other wise why buy a turbo in the first place? plus more to go wrong IE Turbo worries plus lag where as the NA`s dont have this problem ok the NA`s are not as fast but thats not solely what a cars all about, hence why i thought id better put best all rounder ;-)

Oh you're absolutely right. Although it's possible to match mpg across the 2.5 and the T5, I suspect for the average T5 owner this is not the case. I was referring more to steady motorway journey's where a cars best economy can be had if you really want to, although it's still hard to resist unnecessary prods of the accelerator in a turbo'd motor. Maintenance is also more of a consideration for a T5 owner, especially with the 850's now getting to the age/mileage where turbo problems are likely to surface. On top of all that some people dislike the power delivery offered up by a turbo charged engine and wouldn't be seen dead in one! My dad was just such an animal until I tricked him into a V70R

I agree with you, my brother hates Turbo`ed cars and would much sooner have a well set up Na, in fact a few people i know don't like the drive of turbo cars a lot don't even see the point in them in this day and age, but i on the other hand like the power delivery of a turbo motor , and if i could find a well looked after manual 854 T5 CD i would be making a visit to the bank
Although im sure most members are going to hit the T5 vote not because there the best all rounders but simply because there faster Im still not convinced they make the best all round Engines ?

Voted for t5 as I have had a few volvo's and considering there bigger 2.3 and 20v turbos there more efficient on petrol then the other sister's.

As an all rounder which imo includes the odd occasion where you need to accelerate with some urgency then the T5 engine pips it by a galatic mile. You can drive it as quickly or as slowly as you like and it performs as smoothly as silk without hesitation. Last year I had occassion to use an n/a 2.0 20v manual for a few weeks and was quite shocked to see the petrol consumption in the same range of consumption as my Rica'd auto R. As for the lag issue compared to my last turbo'd car you would be forgiven for thinking the T5 didn't suffer from lag but I think that is more thanks to the torque of the engine when at lower engine revs than the spooling characteristics of the turbo.
Blue if your debating a T5, which I know you were at one stage recently, and you have come as far as to ask what they are like the best thing I can advise you to do is go for it whilst you can, find a good one and I am sure you won't be disappointed If your ever in the Essex area drop me a PM you can come for a ride in mine
