Hi all
My 2002 V40 D has started leaking oil from the oil filter, replacing the filter only temporarily cured it. Any ideas what the fault could be? Cheers... |

Hi kenny37
I've recently fitted 2 new filters, both seemed to cure the oil leak for a couple of days and a few miles. Then out of the blue the rubber gasket fails and dumps the contents of the sump onto the road. The only odd thing is, when you remove the filter, the rubber gasket has been dislodged. (pushed out of the filter) The gasket and the filter seem totally undamaged. Any ideas, never had or seen an oil filter fail like this. (I've tried 2 new filters from 2 different manufacturers) |

Are you sure there's not an old rubber still stuck to the housing and you'r trying to fit it with two seals?
Just a thought.

Hi all and thanks for your help.
Just to recap, there aren't any old seals still in place, I'm using a new filter and it's not cross threaded. I think it could be the pressure relief valve, which I believe is part of the oil pump. Is the oil pump for a V40 1.9 turbo diesel in the sump? How big a job is it to change the pump? Any help much appreciated. Thanks again. |

Theres a nut behind the filter itself that could become a bit loose. I think it holds the filter assembly to the engine. You need to take the filter off to get to it and a big socket fits it. Mine was a bit loose, but not leaking. Try to nip it up and see if the leak stops or reduces.

Replaced oil pump a few days ago, so far everything looks OK.
If I don't update this thread again and you suffer the same persistent oil filter, oil leak and you've tried everything else, change the oil pump. |
