Default S60 cuts out when changing from petrol to gas

I am the owner of a 2004 S60 bi fuel volvo which drives perfectly on petrol, but when driving on LPG, without warning, it either loses power or cuts out completely which is pretty scary when driving on the motorway, in fact I refuse to drive on LPG on the motorway now. It wouldn't be so bad if it reverted to petrol automatically but it doesn't, it just stops!!
I first experienced this problem back in 2006 and had a new gas distributer fitted and a new gas regulator. The car ran ok until December last year, then the engine management light came on. The fault was a misfire on no 5 cylinder. I had new spark plugs fitted and the mechanic swapped cylinder 5 to 3 - still it misfired, but showed cylinder 4. The mechanic said it could be all sorts of reasons but it wasn't the cylinder at fault and it was ok to continue driving with the management light on. I took the car to an LPG specialist who serviced it and replaced the gas distributer again. This still didn't solve the problem and now he is saying that the only other thing to try is to replace the gas regulator which is very expensive and theres no guarantee that this will work. I can drive on LPG with no problems at all for days and then it suddenly cuts out. Has anyone else experienced this problem or can anyone advise me please.

Default LPG woes

You'll find quite a few similar tales to yours on here from owners of factory-fit bi-fuel cars.

The Volvo set up seems to be home turf for all sorts of gremlins.

As you're in Bradford I'd suggest you contact John or Chris at Autogas 2000, Thirsk.

Good luck

Have you had the fault codes read by a dealer or VADIS-owning independent yet? I had a misfire that was solved with a new coil on Cyl 5. Another misfire was cured by cleaning out the throtttle body. Seems like I have the same stalling issue as you which everyone says is the distributor. Sounds like the mifire could be unrelated?

From recent experience, go to John at Autogas 2000, it's not a whole long way from Newcastle aind you'll save yourself no end of expense and hassle in the long run. Do it!

Unhappy My tuppence worth...

A repeat of my post on a similar thread...

I've had my 03 S60 Bi-fuel for about 4 months. Recently the engine management / emissions light has come on. I've also had occasional engine failures, normally when coasting or sitting at junctions.

I took it to my local LPG Specialist (J.Hicksons near Lincoln) who has a Volvo Diagnostic Computer. That told him to change the oxygen/lambda sensor which he has done and this has cleared the engine light. He has also diagnosed that one of the cylinders is not getting all the fuel it should or as he put it "its running on 4 1/2 cylinders". He wants to change the stepper motor / distributor. He showed me how if you switch between petrol and gas you can feel that the engine is slightly less smooth on gas.

I think the stepper motor from Volvo is about £230 plus VAT and he reckons about 2 hours labour.

I bought the car with an Autoguard "lifetime" warranty and I am expecting them to cover the cost of parts and labour. (watch this space!)

more like 20 mins of labour for the stepper motor!

check with autogas 2000 for a realistic price for the stepper motor, its still expensive though

Ring ahead and take the car up to Autogas2000, no brainer from Newark and well worth it.
