Nope, the ECU simply isn't sending the info to the port so there's nothing to translate.

I don't know if the adapter can read the "beep codes" but even if it can I don't know of any software that would show them and you certainly wouldn't get the kind of info needed to run the live gauges and readouts that look so cool.

In my Volvo i just use Torque pro for the video and have the G meter's on it every now and again.

As far as im aware, any "OBD " type connector, "pre 2000my" can be using a wide variety of manufacturer specific code sequences, including the volvo system on "light flash pulses". unfortunately these cannot be converted to an OBD 2 signal.

The only way to read these is using a vehicle specific code reader, nuilt with led's to read the code flashes.

My primary interest wasn't on the code reading functionality but instead the fuel consumption data, speed, rpm, pressures, temperatures and so on. There's some really neat apps for the iPhone and Android phones to handle that via a OBDII Wireless reader.

Sorry, but out of luck on any model of car before 2000, the wiring setup does not facilitate those types of sensor readings, they were only used for basic diagnostics.

OBD 2 has gone in leaps and bounds, but only on later models, where the sensors and wiring to the diag plug increased accordingly.

It may be 17 pin, but not all of them are wired up as you would like.[or hope]

You'll have to save up for a newer car to try this toy on !

That's an interesting point. I'm sure you can aftermarket generic ECUs. I wonder if that would be an option for those of us that like the lovely 940 but would prefer a bit more fuel economy.

On that note though, I looked up the performance and economy stats on my dad's much newer car. He has a 2.8 litre V6 Passat. Much newer than my 940. Its official figures for mpg are nearly the same as my car. Ok, ok, for that same efficiency he gets considerably more performance, but then he always seems to be forking out for repairs though.

You'd have to wire in a new ECU as well as fit a whole load of sensors and wiring, it could be done but i doubt its worth it, it would be easier to fit extra gauges and senders to read what you want than convert the car to OBD2 and use a phone to read it.

I believe it has to be an LED to make the circuit work as it only allows current to flow in one direction (I suppose you could use a bulb and an appropriately rated diode, but that would be even more complex).
if you get a 12v rated LED you are also saved the task of adding resistors in series to protest the LED.

I just found a shop assistant and we went through my rough list. My final choice was dictated by what was in stock as mush as aesthetics.
I could probably have used cheaper components and got a similar result.
