Seeking advice on a braking problem, non Volvo
I am seeking some advice from the more mechanically minded amongst you. My wife has a 2003 Toyota Yaris and at times when braking it sounds like the metal rubbing on metal. At other times when travelling at about 30 mph or less and then applying the brakes, the pedal is hard initially then suddenly it goes soft and then hard again. It may do this three or four times before the car stops. The dealer states that it the ABS kicking in, but I have never felt this on any of the cars that I have had with ABS fitted especially being able to feel it on the pedal. I was under the impression that ABS only kicked in under heavy braking and if a wheel locked up. Can someone advise if this is correct or should I chase the dealer again?

It depends how sensitive the ABS is. My S40 had to have an new ABS ECU because it was too sensitive and cut in as soon as you look at the pedal. You should be able to feel the ABS kick in through the pedal. Depending on the make of car you will fee a different feel. eg. SAAB's produce a slight vibration feel through the pedal where as Volvo. the pedal goes hard and you can feel it pulsing and hear a sort of grinding sound.
Ask the dealer to take it out for a drive and check the internet for re-calls on the car. My wife used to have a Clio and the passenger airbag deployed when she was driving. The dealer said that she must have hit a kerb or something to deploy it and refuse to replace it under warrenty. A quick search on the internet revealed that it was a defect eith the car and that a re-call had been issued. So the dealer hada lot of humble pie to eat. |

Hi there,
It sounds like the pads rubbing on metal to metal . If not the pads it could be an ABS cable or sensor rubbing which could be caused by a dodgy wheel bearing and kicking in the ABS when braking normally. Jack it up and spin the wheels and see if you can hear the noise. If so then take the wheel off and have a look. Vaughan |

Hi
If you cant find anything obviously wrong mechanically then i would strongly suggest that its with the ABS system, maybe cleaning all the sensors would help?? If its still under warranty then your dealer who sold it to you should sort this out for you. Maybe the ABS ECU needs reprogramming or something.
