Can't make my mind up if I like these or not? Never seen them before - were they an original option?

Better?
Original ones were extremely flimsy and cheap-looking. These have more storage spaces and look the part.

Was there an Amazon specific one, or is this referring to the early 140 style one with the clock? IMHO this new one looks too modern in style and finish.

Image taken from Accessories Catalogue
I hope this helps. This image I have taken from a German Volvo Amazon Accessories catalogue that I found online in PDF format. So it seems the original included space for a clock and also for auxiliary switches, which would seem to me more useful than the modern thing on offer here. But of course finding an original is like finding rocking horse poo....

Well the modern 'thing' has cupholders, room for a bank of switches and somewhere to stash my phone and thats good enough for me, originality doesn't bother me but practicality does...

Fair enough I say, each to their own.

A nice idea, but based on the pics in the ad, I reckon that's a very awkward location for the cup holders though - being placed further forward would make much more sense from an ergonomics point of view. Also, a more appropriate way to integrate what is essentially a very modern concept into a car of this age would be to have the cup holder recesses set into the bottom of a storage tray, so that they are much less visually prominent.
Tail - I would be interested to hear some feedback of what it is actually like to use though, as I am more than happy to be proved wrong!
