D4 VEA 'check engine' light / EGR fault thread

There were posts in here of people not waiting till March to take delivery so the first 3 year old VEA cars will be appearing soon. 10th March for mine, and others had picked up before me.

I was really trying to elaborate if he was really talking about the VEA 188 bhp D4 or the older 163 bhp D4 which isn't affected.

I've not got a specific car in mind yet but as noted by others, the first of the 181bhp cars will soon be 3 years old.

The older 5 cylinders don't interest me that much, at least not in D4 form, it would have to be the latest D5 to sway me to the older engine.

I'm in no hurry though, my old s40 although to small is coping for now until some answers on long term egr faults are answered.

I just bought a 2017 V40 CC with the D2 VEA engine in it and I notice it has the temperature controlled blind in front of the radiator. I know the XC90 and V90/S90 have the radiator blind but does the D4 VEA XC 60 have it as well?

Roy,
I have just checked my V90 and I cannot see any radiator blind.
Vertical slots in front grill, behind these are several horizontal bars, which one can clearly see the radiator behind them.

I ran this over on the new XC90 forum and a couple of replies from XC90 owners, stating that they had a blind.

I have never owned a Volvo with a radiator blind.

I have made a mistake (senior moment).
Went back for a second look, this time with a torch and the horizontal bars are actually pivoting plastic louvres.

Thanks Tem, I'd have been querying myself otherwise. I did check the new XC90 and saw it open and close when I had it for a few days on loan. V90 looked the same and in the showroom it was shut.

No one has commented on the VEA D4 XC60 yet so I'm thinking it does not have the blind. I wonder if this is why the new XC90 never had an issue with the EGR from it's introduction. It warms up faster. I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the smallest Volvo I must say.

Thanks for your original post, I for one now know and at least one owner of the new XC90, as well.
I have been searching the Owners Manual and so far cannot find any reference to this feature.

Hi tem, glad you found it interesting. I did post a photo of the blind when I reviewed the XC90 after my test drive but people don't always remember everything in the excitement of a new car. Here it is again.
