Smile Cambelt/Servicing

Afternoon All,

I have a 2005 Volvo S40 1.6d (no DPF!). It's in immaculate condition and has just had its 9 year service at 36k miles. The mechanic has advised that I replace the cambelt as the car is coming up to 10 years old, however after having a look around on these different forums there seems to be some different information knocking around! Can anyone advise on a ballpark figure for what I should expect the works to be as the garage I went to seemed to be on the more pricey side! (Not a Volvo garage I'll add; I took it back to the garage I had bought it from as there is a 1 year warranty valid until Oct 2015).

Also, at this age is there anything I should think about replacing or keep an eye on to make sure this car lasts? It has very low mileage (bought in October 2014 with 22k miles!), but I drive quite a bit so will be racking them up.

Any information/tips you have will be most useful!

Thanks

I believe the interval is 100K miles or 10 years however a nice rule of thumb for safety would be 70K miles or 8 years. I changed mine at 8 years and 65K miles due to a noisy tensioner (albeit the 5-cyl petrol).

Make sure you have the Cambelt 'kit' fitted including the Idlers and Tensioners and also it's a great time to fit a new Water Pump whilst there.

The Auxiliary Belts and tensioners would benefit from being changed now if they haven't already and again the mechanic will already be half way to doing them anyway.

The car's battery will be tired by now too if its not already had one.
