Can anyone advise pronto?
Hi All,
I currently have a mechanic around replacing a wheel bearing on my 56 plate S60. He has really struggled to get the bearing out and has now taken away a part off the driveshaft to be heated and or pressed. I hope this makes a bit of sense. He had literally been banging away at it for about 45 mins. Anyway, he is saying that 90% come out with heat ok but if he cant get it out I will have to buy a whole new set of parts. yikes! He's a decent dood so I don't suspect anything, just seems a drastic measure to but new parts that's all. Any advice would be brilliant. Thanks |

Hi,
If it is the front bearing then I am not sure what he is doing? The bearing comes as a new hub with the new bearing encased inside. This just bolts back on with 4 bolts. The drive shaft can be 'glued' in place with locktight but a hefty whack will break the seal. Can only think he is trying to remove the bearing from its carrier? Do you have any more info? Bob

It is the front bearing. I think he has taken away the hub and is trying to split the bearing. Are you suggesting that I need to buy the complete hub and he can't just change the bearings???
I really appreciate your help. |

He's explained that he cant get the shaft out. He said most of the time you just give them a tap and they pop out. He is aware (phew) that it comes as a complete set encased in the hub.
He's tried hitting it, heating it and now, as a last resort pulling it. I hope all is ok, the last thing I need is the car on the path for a few days! |

Hi,
Here is a picture of the bearing housing. There is 4 bolt holes at the top. These fix it to the main axle. The other bolt holes are for the wheel bolts. http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/...e.php?pID=3494 If the link doesn't work try this link http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/...oducts_id=3494 Bob

Hi,
Just seen your last post. Looks like the drive shaft was 'glued' into the hub. This is normally done to stop 'axle ping' where there is a clunk when you move away. Would have thought a bit of heat and a big wallop would break the glue? God luck, Bob

Bob,
You are a megastar. I've just looked at the car, I have limited knowledge but I know a missing driveshaft when I see one. He's taken this with the hub. I think what you are mentioning is exactly what he is doing. Looks like I'll be giving him a 'wallop' if he comes back with a bent shaft and I have to pay for new bits. Thanks |

Hi, i had mine changed a while ago without removing the driveshaft. This is really a drastic measure and it seems like the guy might not know what he is doing. The only time i know drive shaft had to be thrown away with bearing casing is on my 1963 spitfire rear drive shaft, as it was rusted to the bearing and the whole mechanism was slightly bent.
You can always heat the hub, knock it with a hammer (gently not to bent it) and use hub pullers at worst (heavy duty ones) to push the shaft out. good luck and be careful he does not mess up more parts! Max |

Whats happend is that he's tried to take the shaft out so that he can put on a new hub with bearing. The end of the drive shaft seems to fit in the hub and he couldn't get it off. It seems that it was glued previously. He's then took it away, with the drive shaft attached to try and pull it out. He's tried heating it and that didn't work so the last resort was to press it out. He's had it on a 6 ton press and that hasn't shifted it either. I've called a breakers in Preston and they do the Hub carrier, with bearing in for £40 and the drive shaft for £120. His labour is £100 notes. Maybe it's a bit of inexperience on his part, I don't know. I'm just concered that if I get him to glue the shaft back in once its fixed, I might have the same problem when I require a new bearing at some point in the furture! aaaarggggh Thanks Guys. |
