Default Knocking sound

Hello!
My 1996 940 2.3se turbo has a rhythmic knocking which is noticeable from the passenger footwell and left wheel arch.It increases with speed, does not dissapear when clutch down and is only heard at idle.Cant hear it from under bonnet, engine good!Any ideas anyone? Apart from that its a great car, just curious!

Can you clarify

'increases with speed ..... and is only heard at idle' as a car cannot idle at speed unless the clutch is depressed.

Hi
Thanks for reply. The knock is only noticeable at idle 700 to1000 rpm approx, above that it is not heard,i suspected gearbox, hence my note about (de)pressing clutch pedal not making a difference.Puzzled as to why sound is so localised to passenger footwell area.
Thanks, Tony

There was another post re slight knocking on a Turbo, and it was suggested that the fuel pipes ( which run under passenger side ) caused such a noise.
