Four-C Service Required" HELP PLEASE.

Sorry but is this a wind up, or have you totally got your wires crossed( pun intended!)
The strut on ebay may be for a D5 but is not a 4C shock absorber.

A strut is the complete assembled article,top mount,bump stop,gaiter,spring and in the middle of it all the damper - which in the case of the 4C is where the solenoid is housed. From the bottom of the damper should be a control wire - if yours don't have this it's either not a 4C or has been butchered.

The accelerometer should be mounted on one of the 'wings' on the strut so the complete strut unit has two wires, one from the small box like accelerometer and one from the bottom of the damper - both of which lead to connections in the engine bay. If yours dont comply with this no amount of testing or cleaning will get the system to work with damaged/wrong components.

Ok no wires no butchering so the ones on my xc70 must of been replaced then
so i take it i have to live with the message but still not sure why its only showing a fault on one side? but thank you

I don't know why you would only get fault codes for one side if both have been replaced with the wrong components, but I can understand why it was done - replacing 4C dampers with new would take a surprisingly substantial number of beer tokens. I have read several people asking if 4C can be replaced with 'ordinary' dampers and somehow 'trick' the system into not throwing a code but have never read where someone actually achieved it.

yes, i had herd you cold short the wiring some how
i have since noticed two more sockets in the engine bay with no lead going out of them i guess they must of been the shock connections.
well i will live with it for now see how it goes
when i can i will try purchase the proper ones

Just at a guess it would probably be a bit more than just shorting pins, I may be wrong on this one but a lot of sensors use variation of resistance to signal to the ecu. You might try and find out what resistance it is supposed to be and putting in some resistors, seeing as they are literally pennies (although you'll probably have to buy a bag of 200) I would bet decent money it isn't that simple though just because nothing ever is

'Four-C is integrated with the traction control, braking systems and engine management on your Volvo so removing it is not a simple matter'

Probably sums up why there doesn't appear to be a 'simple fix' to replace or fool the system.

wow ok so it's not really even advisable to try then is it, if you're not really sure what effect that's going to have on your abs and traction control, etc

I recall having convo. recently about preferring to not have any of that stuff anyway, which is fair game for debate / personal preference... but having it there and malfunctioning is probably even worse than not having it at all

sounds like an ebay / breakers job to me if replacing it with new outvalues the car or makes it not worthwhile
