Default B234f cambelt help!

Hi experts!
My k plate 940 16 valve lpt was due to have its belts, pulleys and water pump changed today. Garage have rung saying parts they ordered are wrong. They say they need to order correct ones from main dealers at around £380 for parts alone. With labour for fitting my bill might be close to £700. This is almost double of original quote. Also lead time for parts might be 2-4 weeks. I’ve said hold on until I consult you gurus!
What should I do?
Thanks
Steve

I think a B234 belt is about £40 but the total still seems a bit high

I suppose if you change the balancer belt and all tensioners etc you could be close to that figure though

You could try FRF in Swansea for the parts and (hopefuilly) get some discount for being on here, that might work out cheaper. They could potentially get the parts quicker as well.

Sadly with timing belts being a service item, your only option is to pay up and look big, sell it quick or change the engine.

Only you can decide, as for using it meanwhile, if you know when it was last done you may be able to make a judgement as to whether there is sufficient life left in the various parts until the parts come in. If not then alternative transport until the parts get here as the 16v engines are definitely interference engines.

Also a waterpump from a main dealer will be well over £100.00. A good SKF one is about £40.00

I've never delved into the 16v redblocks Mark, do they use the same water pump as the normal 8v units? If so and the current one isn't leaking, i'd say leave the pump along as it's probably original and will outlaast any aftermarket replacement unit (including an allegedly genuine one from a dealer at £Ridiculous) but obviously if the timing belt drives the pump on the 16v units, change it so they can guarantee their work.

Get a quote from your dealer , also the balance shaft belt tension is critical its a lot slacker than you might think ...

Is it definitely a 16V? You've said LPT which was only on the 8V and they did do a 16V HPT but not for our market. Definitely give FRF a call and get a price for the kit from them and you will get owners club discount too.

+1 on this. Its either 16v Naturally aspirated, or 8v turbo, I'll have my knickers blown off if its an import from europe
