That slips out ok ... ???? I probably have an advantage having done hundreds since 1991 when this type of engine came out in the 960 ... but really . try it without taking the pulley off next time you can do it in much less time then

ok so u havent taken the lower cover off so how do u get the tensioners off ?

how do u remove the idler pully ?

and as far as my memory serves me the lower cover is one peice on the s2 engines how do u get around removing the cam idler pully ?

The tensioner is held by just the one 12 mm AF bolt in the centre nothing in the way once the top part of the cover is off ,jacking the engine up higher than its normal position helps as you already have the engine mount off .
The cam belt idler to the right is never scheduled by volvo to be changed and never gives trouble much like the 850 tensioner wheel and 240 740 940 360 tensioner . I have never ever seen one give a problem , its not loaded really as the belt just lightly brushes past it .
You only take off the top half of the timing belt cover , ( one screw in the centre ) yes the lower part is quite complicated as part of the plastic backing which stays put .
The 940 belts are great once you get past all the V belts and know that the teeth changed from square section to round section at 1993 model year !
The easiest has to be the pre 1978 240 B21/23 my record was 7 minutes .
The S/V40 GDI is a challenge , ever done one ? official time over 3 hours . Do you work anywhere near Gaskel street ?

Thanks for the help. In the end I just decided to remove the crank pulley and that RAC impact wrench was brilliant adamsky01 so thanks for recommending that.

I did have a little trouble at first keeping the tension as i wrapped the new belt around, because the only cars i've done a cambelt on before have been my 91 and 79 vw polos.

In the end i used one of those trigger pump clamps to hold the belt around the crank sprocket and stop it from slipping.
