Service and auto box oil change
Going to get my 05 XC90 D5 serviced shortly.
141K on it. I've been told gearbox is sealed, but that changing it is a wise option! -What is the best engine oil and gear oil to go for? -Is there any specific way to change gear oil? I've a relative who's a mechanic and he'll be doing the work on a proper lift etc. Cheers |

Re the auto box, changing the oil is very worthwhile BUT YOU MUST USE JWS3309 SPEC OIL AND NOTHING ELSE
Couple of videos showing each but the first is on a 5 speed auto and the second on the later 6 speed auto. 5 speed you refill via the dipstick tube on gearbox. You have 2 options. 1. Sump Dumps which is where you remove the gearbox drainplug and release the sump contents ( only about 3 ltrs will come out and a further 4 will remain in the torque convertor) . Fill back up with fresh fluid to the correct level and then after a couple of hundred miles repeat the process and keep doing it for about another 4 times. Yes you are mixing new oil with old BUT it is gentle on the gearbox and eventually you end up with fresh fluid. Think of it this way, if you poured a glass of orange juice and drank half and then topped up with water and then drank half and topped up with water, eventually you would be drinking just water.
2 The Gibbons method.

Loads of us on here have used Mannol JWS 3309 from Ebay ( from a German Seller ) and it has been fine. Toyota JWS3309 spec oil is also fine as will Volvo but the Volvo stuff will be expensive.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20L-MANNO...cAAOSwcLxYFh~w Comma do the correct spec as well.

Volvo gearbox oil price
Hi,
Had my gearbox oil changed last week by Hutton Bothers Volvo Specialist at York, they advised the sump dump method as it was much simpler/cheaper and I had no Gbox issues, just preventative maintenance. (6 speed box with no dipstick, hence why I entrusted it to them). Genuine Volvo oil price was £15 per litre inc VAT. One hours labour included VIDA counter reset. Diference is noticeable with a more positive change. Main dealer wanted £350 for the job but that included flushing everything through and re programming the box which did not seem necessary as there were no faults.

I've just done my first sump dump. But don't bother getting under the car. I got a 12v pump from Lidl a few years back. Pipe down dipstick hole, pump out until it stops coming, got 3L out.
Then turn pump round and pump in 3L of fresh. Took about 45 mins all told. This is the longest it's ever taken because the oil was so cold.

Great, should any make of JWS3309 oil do the job? Have a few relatives in carparts so I'll see what they can get me, although I'm almost sure they stock mannol. It's booked in for next weekend.
What would be best grade of engine oil (141k on it). Cheers folks. |

Have you got a Black Engine Cover or a Grey Engine cover.
Black = Euro 3 163 bhp engine with no DPF Grey = Euro 4 185 bhp with DPF. On my last Volvo with Euro 4 engine I decided not to use the specified 0w-30w oil and instead went for Mobil 1 ESP ( low ash for the DPF ) 5w-30w and it ran perfectly for the 60k miles that I had it. Check the correct specs for your particular engine and just buy a good quality oil. The appropriate Shell Helix from ECP is also a safe bet.
