Default XC60 Cutting Out

Hi all,

I’m new to this site having just purchased a four year old XC60. I only picked it up yesterday and, so far, am delighted with it... Except for one problem. I’ve taken it out, today, and done approx. 150 miles (visiting Lancashire and back). On three occasions, it cut out while I was driving! Each time, I was going slowly / slowing down and, while this was disconcerting, I initially questioned if it was me, stalling the car. However, I wasn’t convinced by this and have ruled that out. I’m obviously concerned that there is an issue with my new car (thankfully, I have a warranty), but I feel that this issue might be due to my lack of experience with the stop / start ignition. I suppose, my question is, can the car cut out if you put it into neutral while also taking your foot off the clutch, when travelling? Obviously, not a driving technique that I try to employ, but I’m trying to figure out why it should be cutting like this and it’s all I can think that I might have done to cause the issue. The car has manual gears and while I know the stop / start is designed to stop if you are in neutral and your foot is off the clutch, I didn’t think this would happen when travelling! Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Boothen

Bit of a glitch that you will get used to. Stop Start will come on before you reach a halt but only very low speed. If you turn off stop/start and it still does it then you may have a problem.

Thanks for the quick reply. I hope that it is only the ‘glitch’ that I’m experiencing. I’ve experienced the stop / start working correctly, but when it cuts out while I’m travelling, the yellow dashboard warning lights flash and then I’m left with the press start message, in order to get going again. It seems quite dangerous, but I suppose the obvious solution is not to drive in neutral with your foot off the clutch! Thanks again.

If it is a diesel engine then sounds a bit like the fuel filter needs replacing, make sure it is an official Volvo one to ensure no issues. Worth having checked out.

From your description I'm guessing it is a manual transmission.
My 2014 D4 AWD had to be in neutral with the hand brake on for the stop/start to operate.
As soon as a gear was engaged then the engine would restart.
