Default 2011 V60 intermittent boot open

Hi all,

New here so apologies if this is the wrong place to post!

I've just bought a 2011 V60 D3, a very nice car indeed, and my first Volvo (traditionally a Citroen fan for all my sins).

Overall its in very good condition, however it has a couple of niggles I'd like to iron out. The most important of which is the boot release is temperamental, on the physical boot button/key/interior push button.

I've done some research on possible causes of this issue, and today did some investigations. I'm generally pretty handy with vehicle electrics, but this one has me stumped.

I've removed the boot release button and circuit tested this, the switch circuit itself works every time. There's power to it, completes a circuit when depressed etc.
There is also a good earth to this point (apparently a common problem on these?).

There is also a good earth to the latch itself, when the boot opens the tailgate light comes on and goes out when it's shut.
However the power going from the switch doesn't always make it to the latch, hence the intermittent bit!

Any ideas on what to try next? I've seen a video of an XC70 earth repair, but as mentioned there's a seemingly good earth already.

Thanks!

Hello

Your earth path could have a high resistance or a break in it which is exacerbated with tailgate closed.

To rule out a poor or broken earth wire make up a length of cable with a crocodile clip at each end and connect one to the vehicle body and the other to an earth point on the tailgate - wiper motor spindle should suffice. - see if this changes anything.

On the XC70 with similar issues the earth wire connector in the headlining cannot handle the current being sent through it, which melts the connector and causes high resistance and sporadic failure....I don't know if your vehicle shares a similar wiring system.
