Default Getting the overdrive back on.

Hello,
Hope someone can help me here. Have spent a while wrestling with
an m41 and j type o/d, trying to put them back together. Cannot do it, will not go all the way down the shaft. What am I missing? O/D seems to sit on the cam, and not push onto the large spring loaded whatnot (Volvo term)
Gearbox and o/d both out of car, so was able to have a good wiggle, push, swear, push, swear, wiggle, swear. No go.
Any tips?
Thanks a lot for any help. Baz, got any ideas?
Dave

Hah, yes, the manual says you ought to be able to just slide it all together but it doesn't work like that...

When I converted my Amazon to overdrive the unit I got didn't work, which turned out to be because someone else had had this problem and tried to overcome it by force... the pump piston was bent and the barrel was split all down one side...

My method was to loop a piece of wire through the roller carrier on the end of the pump piston, lead it out through the gap between gearbox and overdrive, and use it to pull the pump piston down at the critical moment. Move the overdrive just a tad further on so the cam overlaps the roller, and pull the piece of wire out just before it gets trapped

Default overdrive

Hi. I parted the overdrive from the gearbox once as well. It said in the manual undo the bolts and slide out. Except once you undo the bolts there is a lot of play available and cutting a long story short I had one of the syncromesh springs shoot out, this led to eventualy stripping the gearbox, then about 6 million roller bearings and shims fell out all over the garage floor. I had to strip the gearbox of everything and start again. An even longer story cut short I eventualy managed single handed and without the use of special tools needed managed to get it all back together but it almost finished me off and I swore never ever to separate the overdrive from the gearbox again. Trying to keep everything in place when you slide the shaft that goes through the main shaft without any rollers or thrust washers falling out was almost impossible.

Good luck.
