XC70: General - XC70, stick with or swap to V60CC, that is the question?

My reliable and well loved 2014 XC70 D4 (2wd manual) is coming up to 5 years old and is about to clock up 90k.

I was interested to see the V60 CrossCountry AWD Auto T5 (petrol) being released and am very tempted to swap as this is a fine looking car with more modern kit and will obviously have another 4 - 5 years of warranty etc.

I am likely to cover around 20k per year for the next few years and would appreciate peoples views ..... stick or swap?

For several reasons I'd keep the V70. If I was worried about repairs I'd get a 3rd party warranty, but P3 V70's appears to be fairly sound, save for rear trailing arm bushes - what's yours needed in way of repairs, other than servicing?? Can you maintain your own vehicle ? If yes even more reason to stick with the V70 and spend the money lost on £4k+/yr depreciation else where.

I was tempted to buy an XC60 when I bought my 2015MY V70 D5. At first I was unsure if I had done the right thing - possibly due to the heavy advertising, but now I'm glad I got the V70. - Its bigger , but not quite so "Chelsea Tractor" in image, not that that would bother me.

Would a diesel not be far more efficient for that kind of mileage?
A very fine looking car but maybe smaller than your xc70? Or is space not a concern? Is your car showing problems? The new V60 is a very nice place to sit in though from my visit to a dealer recently.

I met a forum member last night by chance (albeit he no longer has his Volvo) and one thing he said to me when I asked if he fancied another Volvo in the future is that he'd get a XC70 again after seeing the latest variant before close of production. The reason being is that the design has been well tuned over it's 9-10 year production life cycle, so most niggles are gone and the engine refined. Whereas the new V60 and V90 models (even in CC) for the time being are really unproven and are there designs influenced by China hence the glitzy Chelsea tractor look they are starting to have. Have to admit, the XC70 still looks 'Volvo', the new V60 and V90 seems to move away from that with their curves and angled rear. Never seen the boot spaces but from the outside look smaller.

Better the devil you know.
My 2wd xc70 is now 10 years old and I'm keeping it. Looked at the 60 before buying it and felt clostrophobic after the V70 I had.

My last volvo mind as nothing new has manual transmission.

Thanks for all the responses. A few thoughts on your comments from me .....

- Petrol vs diesel - I've done the sums and at 44mpg for a diesel vs 34 mpg for a petrol, taking into account that 80% of my miles is at a company fuel rate 3ppm higher for petrol, the fuel cost over a year is not that different and my guess is that the fuel cost differential will only widen and that's also ignoring the lower purchase price for a petrol.

- Warranty for repairs etc. - good suggestion, what do people use and is it really worthehile for a catr that will be >100k soon?

- Keep what you know vs new - this is the difficult one as I love my XC70 and find it just so comfortable to drive long distances and it is so spacious too. However, I'm attracted by an AWD auto and also newer and better lights, which I've never really been happy with on the XC70.

Overall, still in the balance ...... so going to get a test drive and see what PCP deal I can get.....

All I'm going to say is your in for a big shock if you think going from a FWD diesel to a AWD petrol isn't going to be that big of a difference in fuel, I know people who have gone from AWD diesel to FWD petrol who regretted it purely on fuel costs alone! Out of interest how did you get those figures? I'm guessing 44mpg is what your getting now and not the NEDC figure? and the 34 is the NEDC figure and not what you can actually get?

If you love your current XC70 have you tried some brighter bulbs? although there is no denying the newer headlamps are a lot better! I'm guessing you have H7's, I personally found Philips extreme vision quite good on an older Volvo and they lasted longer than standard bulbs too, might be worth a punt at £20 before changing the car

People still do PCPs? I can't think of anything worse having a mileage limit and handing the car back with all the money spent and nothing to show for it!

coming late to this thread - my '08 XC70 has done 170k miles and I'm keeping it until I am forced to let it go. It's comfortable, uses no oil, and hardly gives any trouble.

I'd definitely get another.

Hmmm... with your D4 XC70 2WD you will probably be making money at the HMRC advisory rates.

With a petrol automatic AWD you will not... the question is by how much?
