Power steering
Got my flame proof jacket on :-)
I read the US article about converting an 1800ES to have power steering (http://home.earthlink.net/~goodspeeds/PSTERING.HTM). It is an "upgrade" that I would love for my Amazon. Has anyone any advice to offer? Would this be something I should be talking to a professional about? |

Is your 1800 left or right-hand-drive? If it's the latter:
There were no RHD 140s with factory fitted power steering, so the only option for a powered RHD Volvo steering box is one from a 164. But I don't think that will work well because the angles are different, with the 164 having a 100mm longer wheelbase than a 140. I think your best option would be to keep the OE steering box and add electric power assistance. EZ do kits for Volvos. http://www.ezpowersteering.nl/car/26/51/Volvo.html Naturally, they are not cheap. It that's beyond your budget, and if you're handy with the spanners yourself, a DIY version is possible using Peugeot or Vauxhall electric PAS from a breaker car. But if you're not into DIY and would need to pay by the hour to ceate a system, I'd say the EZ product would probably be the better option. John |

Here is a link to another company which makes electric power steering units in the UK & seemingly much less expensive than EZsteer:-

Easysteer is based on the Corsa unit. These can be picked up on ebay as can the adjuster units and with a bit of diy can be made to fit much cheaper.

I cant stand electric power steering - it just feels clunky and horrible. I can understand if you are too fragile to steer the car then it can be the only viable option and if it keeps a car on the road then I'm fine with that.
Using the 140 parts or similar with a proper PAS system is going to feel much better but there is a lack of anything that will fit. I would say first thing to do if you find the steering is heavy is to check tyre pressures and replace and worn or stiff front suspension joints. They are normally very easy and light to steer with the original bus steering wheel. |

I would go with Easy steer in the UK.
My experience of EZ in the Netherlands is that they are cowboys. They cracked my lower dash pad and left me without a working horn! I made countless phone calls to the companies' owner in the Netherlands who gave me empty promises so many times. I tried everything but they refused to come good on their many, many promises. I have given up now and rigged up my own horn! Easy Steer sound like reasonable people though I have not dealt directly with them. In the end the EPS is ok, but I wish I hadn't bothered as I never really park the car in a tight spot anyway that warrants it! We live and learn! Hope this helps. Gordon |
