I had no idea why as there wasnt anything around really or no sign for queing or crash etc ... luckily there were cars in front of me who continued doing about 60mph (about 4 of them) then suddenly an almighty display of flashing started where I suddenly dropped all achors and slammed my brakes down to 30 mph ..... The motorway was still pretty empty and the next signs after that said 40mph which was weird and again the cars in front got another mighty display of camera flashing which caused everyone to slam brakes again.

driving on the M25 for another hour and saw no traffic, breakdown, queing etc etc to of warranted that drop in speed .... oh yes the time I was driving at was 1am

Under taking seems to be acceptable as well now with these smart motorways making it more of a free way as people just sit in whatever lane they want now just looking at their speed limit and many cars never got flashed or anything for undertaking.
The M25 became our first smart motorway in the 90’s, variable speed limit, widened etc etc. The M42 is a classic example of sometimes poor speed management. Empty motorway that goes from 70 to 40 and then straight back to 70 in the space of a few gantry’s with no reason for it. Smart motorways is just a cheap way to widen them.

Let's hope so. Fingers crossed.

Did anybody see the news item yesterday about Smart Motorway's not being as safe as the Highways Agency thought they would be & that they impact emergency services response times ?

Flipping Heck I wonder how much they paid somebody to do the study of the flaming obvious.

Even the former Head of the Highways Agency that introduced them admitted they had issues.

I Know it's the daily fail but all I could find

Oh, look! They already blame motorists who drive in lanes marked with red "X"!

Apparently all these accidents are motorists' faults, not the agency's.

In truth Thomas all those accidents ARE the drivers fault. Failier to drive to the conditions and be observant leads to hitting things.

While I control my car it's the others out there that worry me, I know my capabilities, I have no idea of theirs and many do little to inspire confidence.

And in the light of both government AND manufacturers promoting drivers incompetence...
(Automatic brakes, automatic lights, automatic "stay in lane" thingy, plus distractions "Facebook built into dashboard" etc)...

Of course its all, ALL, motorists' fault, no?

Yes it doesn't help but the driver is the one in charge of the vehicle which makes them responsible for its safe conduct.
Personally I would like driver air bags replaced by a big sharp very visible spike . Would consentrate minds far quicker than an air bag

I have done and yes it does, but the steering is so vague you need to be 100% alert to avoid the trees. There is NO dozing off in a series.
