The salesman who sold me my XC40 told me that I’d easily achieve an average of 39mpg. The reality is an average of 35mpg. I don’t live in a city, so no stop start driving for me.

A few months ago I started experimenting with different fuels and additives. The additives were difficult to pour into the filler and made absolutely no difference to fuel economy. Tesco premium fuel, which is not as expensive as other premium fuels near me, returned much improved fuel economy.

Using supermarket E10 fuel @ 142.9p returned an average of 33 mpg (20p/mile), and Tesco Momentum 99 @ 149.9p averaged 40mpg (17p/mile). nb: prices as at Feb 2023.

So, in my experience, the E5 fuels do provide better fuel economy, but premium brands such as Shell and BP could still work out more expensive. My local Shell garage is currently selling V-Power E5 at 163.9p / litre, whereas Tesco Momentum 99 is 147.9p/ litre. I only wish we had a Tesco garage closer than 4 miles away.

I use Tesco momentum for my turbo Subaru and it's very good - like you , I choose it over any other Super Unleaded /premium fuel.

On the additive point you mentioned, there might be a little plastic nozzle/funnel somewhere hidden in the boot. Mine had gone missing, but if you buy a Ford Focus one on eBay it's basically the same part to push into the fuel tank inlet to pour in additives. Easy.

No experience on petrol additives (as use best fuel only) but for diesel I recommend Miller's Eco Powermax. I haven't done the sums, but I've never had a 'diesel related issue' in all the years I've been using it.

Recently reset my overall mpg readout and am now achieving 39.8 mpg after a lengthy spell around 35 mpg.

From my own experience of some 8 months of owning my XC40 B4 and clocking up a total of 4832 miles, I have averaged 37.2mpg.
Its not great but I wasnt getting that in my previous, a V90 D4.
So I am not too disappointed.

Wow Rustyfrog, doesn’t time fly.

I’ve had my B4 around 18 months now. When I first acquired the car, my biggest complaint was the disappointing fuel consumption. At the time, someone on line told me it would improve once the engine has a few miles on it. I wasn’t convinced, but it seems they were right; it has improved. I was originally getting something like 29mpg average. I’ve now put 12k miles on the clock and I’m currently showing an average of 38.6 mpg on the phone app. This is backed by my own calculations done from full tank to full tank.

On a recent tour of Scotland I was achieving 48mpg (50mpg on one particular day). No more complaints about fuel consumption from me.

Good to hear from you Keith, and that you are still happy with your XC40.
You are right time does fly. Especially when in my case, you find you are the same age as old people!

Much the same here. We are enjoying the XC40.
Most of our journeys are localish these days, with the occasional more distant long weekend trips.
MPG wise, I have managed around low 40's on longer journeys, but I dont worry too much about these things, just prefer to enjoy the drive.
The move from diesel to petrol was a good move for us.
No more worries re DPD's, and being the one killing off Polar bears etc.
I do still miss the V90 though.
