Default A/C Compressor Fun

A/C compressor clutch has gone and with summer coming up and two dogs in the back, time to replace it. Not going to fanny around with shims.
Garage got the part number and compressor duly arrived BUT it has a different pulley! Instead of running around all the other pulleys with a multi rib belt, mine has its own little v-belt running from one of the other pulleys... That's as the garage explained it.
Checked the part number again on the compressor and the right one was given, it just appears that for some cars, there is a different setup.
After a lot of ringing around, one now on its way.
How weird!

As far as I am aware the AC has always been driven off the power steering pump via its own stretch belt.

The outer Aux belt has only ever driven the alternator and power steering pump on the cars I’ve had.

The only difference and I think this could be your problem is a change in power steering pump, later cars have the hydro electric system which uses the thinner belt where as earlier cars had the standard hydraulic system which uses a much larger/wider stretch belt.

With yours an ex service car there could be some other changes maybe?

I did wonder that. On the Volvo Special Vehicles spec I got from Volvo nothing is mentioned, bar the uprated alternator but as you say, that's on a different belt anyway.
