I suspect (haven't yet confirmed) the problem is that, under the new Euro DRL regs, manufacturers will have to undergo official fuel/emissions testing and ratings with them on. I agree that the addional fuel used by (sensible) DRLs would be so tiny as to be undetectable in normal driving, but fuel & emissions ratings count for so much these days that I bet the manufactures will leave no stone unturned in their search for an extra 0.1 mpg. After all, if they find ten such stones it becomes noticeable compared to the competition and may even tip them down into a lower road tax band.

Another thing we must all remember... UK law mandates the use of headlamps in seriously reduced daytime visibility. It matters not if the car has DRLs, and even if the tail lamps were lit up with the DRLs; the law still requires headlamps. I personally hope the Police will continue to rigidly enforce that for cars fitted with Euro standard DRLs, but will they?

CONTINUE? ROTFL!
I've never ever seen a car pulled by plod for driving with sidelights (parking lights?) in very poor conditions, and I average roughly 3k miles a month

Plod can't be bothered, and as muppets won't put their lights on, I'd much rather come upon a car with rear lights & front DRL on in the fog than one with no lights at all.
