Default Lots of error codes. Need help diagnosing root cause.

Volvo S40 SE
RE05 XAH
1.8 Petrol
Engine designation according to manual B4184S11
Vin YV1MS214252102870


Bought car a couple of years ago and started getting "reduced engine performance" on dash readout. Garage determined throttle position sensor faulty and replaced pedal+sensor

Car uses 1/2 a litre of oil per tank of petrol. Drives well 35mpg.

Last week I was on a 200 mile run and stopped off for a break. Reduced engine performance dash warning had been showing for months but I couldnt afford to have it looked at or was ignoring the problem...
Car refused to start. No life from engine and a bunch of dash warnings as attached

Recovery service called out who couldnt start it at first but then after a failed bump start (no engine activity) the car came to rest and after that it started as normal.

Took to garage and they found:

Error Codes
2138 - accelerator pedal position sensor faulty signal
2121 accelerator pedal faulty circuit *
D900 Configuration fault. Software faulty
C168 Intermittent fault. Commmunication brake control module (BCM) signal too low
C400 Control modulle communication ; faulty signal
C167 Intermittent fault. Communication central electronic module (CEM) signal too low.

*Cleared all codes and 2121 returned. Pedal+postion sensor replaced (for the second time)

Paid for work. Started car and "reduced engine performance" on dash. Turned off engine, spoke to mechanic as still at garage. He turned ignition on and error no longer displayed so drove home keeping fingers crossed.

Car parked up for 3 days then today I went to start it and got a bunch of errors on dash readout. Same as before. No life from engine. Lights come on etc as normal.

Questions

Whats wrong?

Have I got any reasonable comeback with the garage?

If you had taken it to the experts , a volvo garage they would have known straight away what to do due to their experience , The pedal sensor is never at fault ,
The problem is very likely to be the 3 pairs of network wires when they go into the CEM through the plugs . Volvo do repair terminals , you would need 6 replacing . also wise to renew the data wire from pedal to CEM . changing the terminals on the pedal plug would be an insurance policy too .

Thanks Clan. As it happens I did take it to Bridgend Volvo specialists the first time around and they replaced the pedal. Hey ho eh?

Any idea how much I'd be looking at to have the work done? I've just spent £270 on it for the unnecessary fix. The car's not worth more than a grand if it was in good working order. If it's not complicated I could perhaps try a non volvo garage again(!) to save money.

If it was you, would you ask the most recent garage to perhaps do a little work for free or at a reduced rate? I mean, were they at fault or am I grasping at straws here?

I don't suppose the garage can be blamed, they don't have the experience on less common faults , that's why you pay less of course .I'm afraid there is only one volvo expert and that is the dealer who does this kind of thing on a daily basis , dealing with all know faults and has the back up of volvo themselves and bulletins etc . the proper wiring diagram is needed and the wiring terminal repair part numbers , no one else will know what to do apart from reading what I wrote above . Just disconnecting the battery , taking the CEM out the car and putting back in may just clean the terminals and it may be ok for a while , but if the spring grip in the terminals are weak renewal is the only permanent cure .

well 10 or 15 terminals are not going to cost much , it is the labour involved , 2 or 3 hours ? ask them , they should have done this before over the last 10 years .
The video covers CLEANING the pins , there is corrosion there due to wash fluid leaking in the pump and working its way up the pump wire to the CEM over a period of years . There was a recall for this .. If you are paying someone I would make sure the 6 network Female terminals are renewed together with the pedal terminals and a new signal wire from pedal to CEM .

Hi, just for info. I wouldn't argue with what Clan has said. I suffered like issues with my C70. Cleaned the CEM plugs and terminals, touch wood it's been ok since. There is a video on you tube if you search for cleaning a volvo CEM, it gives you some idea what is needed. Saves paying out a fortune to the dealer if it works for you.
