Default New owner with serious smoke problem on V70

Hi there
Im Al, I bought a V70 yesterday, 2001, one owner, loads of history. 2.4 170 petrol auto.
I drove it very very gently home, a trip of 90 miles without any issue other than noticing a very clear oil burning smell from the left hand (gearbox end) of the engine bay when I got home.

Today, I checked oil, very low, so topped up with Castol GTX (don't worry, this isn't an oil thread) It was on the bottom level and took 2 litres, so now I know why it was for sale.......

Anyway, its onwards not backwards so I drove it a few miles today to see what was what and noticed it puffed a veritable cloud of white smoke upon anything other than very gentle acceleration. This is particularly obvious after a sustained period of deceleration. I didnt see this yesterday as I was driving very gently indeed.

Now then, this time, after a 20 mile trip with a light foot with occasional slightly brisker acceleration which always created the smoke, the smell was much stronger with actual smoke coming from under the bonnet at the left hand side although I could not trace the source.

This told me that the oil is likely to be a consequence of either an external leak onto a hot component , or from introduction into the exhaust directly. The idea of external leak onto hot thing seems more likely as this would fit both the cloud at the back and the smoke in the engine bay.

Im a spanner man so I immediately thought, pressurisation and hoped to heck that it wasn't the rear main seal. I have removed the dipstick and am seeing smoke out of the tube, im also seeing positive pressure at the filler neck so the PCV system is certainly blocked up.

I drove it back the 20 miles with the lightest of light touches, mostly at 70 MPH without any smoke whatsoever, never going above 2000 revs additionally, none was evident on my opening the bonnet for a look once I was back home.

Question, anyone ever seen this issue of clouds when the PCV system is blocked?
Do we think it could be RMS? i don't actually as the exhaust isn't likely to get covered by a leak from it in any case. or is it????

Help and advice much appreciated, of course, ill replace the PCV components but if the RMS is gone It may not be financially viable.

Thanks
Al
