Post 745 wants in Northants

hi all,

looking for a monster parts list to fix up my moms old 745GL for my first car. i have untill August 2011 to get it sorted and am struggling for parts.

i NEED to get the odometer fixed, along with fitting a new rheostat for the dash lighting, new track rod ends, and a service.

I would also like to sort: new seats, preferably leather, Headlining (might need some ideas on that front!), a piece of trim on the dash is broken, alloy wheels, passenger window switch is intermittant, new stereo head unit from an 850 for a CD changer that I have.

I'm hoping that all of this will come to less than £500, but its not all necessary so I might have to compromise on a few things.

I will add more items as I think of them.

Any help will be appreciated.

Richard

ok your going to have to look round the breakers in and around your area. a keen eye and patence is needed but the bigger parts will come up like wheels and the headliner. now the headliner, i advise you take from a 945 or 965 car due to the better construction and materials inthe later roofs. thety are all like for like in fitting, colours may vary!
everythign else peopel will have on here.. allways look in the for sale section for cars breaking. other parts you shoudl be able to get new liek the track rods etc from autoparts stores europart is probably your best bet

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the forum! You'll get plenty of help and advice on here.

Has the car been off the road a while? Can you post up some photos of the good and bad bits.

It sounds pretty good if those are the only jobs you need.

Some comments added below.

I'm guessing that you are young, talking about your first car? Maybe have a look at this thread... sounds a similar story!

Cheers

John

I would also like to sort: new seats, preferably leather, Headlining (might need some ideas on that front!) 940 item, or as a holding measure, some careful work with a staple gun, a piece of trim on the dash is broken photo, alloy wheels, passenger window switch is intermittant carefully dismantle & clean contacts inside, new stereo head unit from an 850 for a CD changer that I have.

I'm hoping that all of this will come to less than £500, but its not all necessary so I might have to compromise on a few things.

hi all, thanks for the advice,

John H, the car is not off the road although when i wrote the post, i thought it was going to be soon. there are a few other things to do, but i have untill aug 2010! there are a couple of dents to sort, and the lip of the bonnet and the rear wheel arches need a touch up, but other than that i think it was a good accedental find when mom bought it for £500.

i had read Williams thread from start to finnish this week, after i noticed that there were similar issues.

Jim, looks like Ni Nut may have many of the bits that i need, including the alloys, so i am iun the process of sorting some of that out at the moment, but i hadnt realised that the headliner from 940/960s fitted. i thought that they had changed a lot of the interior trim and that they wouldnt fit. at least i dont have the dreaded sunroof issues!

despite having a number of parts hopefully coming from NI in the not too distant future, i would still appreciate anyone who has any bits that they think i might appreciate, or who knows of a scrappys/ breakers in the daventry/northants area.

does anyone know if the volvoguard systems with central locking can be retro fitted on these models, as i would like to sort that c locking and an alarm out, but would prefer it to be a volvo system, because at least then it would look origonal!

Richard

PS. sorry for my terrible spelling, despite private schooling, i still rely on spell checker, which vbulletin seeem to have neglected to add on here!

Hi Richard

Good luck with the project - hope you dont mind if i am stating the obvious but as a father with an 18 yr old son thought it may be worth advising that you check you can get insurance before spending the money - i know we struggled finding a low insurance group car - and the volvo did not come into that catagory

Best regards
Martin

im sure it will be expensive, but i will only be as a second driver till im at least 20, as i will be at DSFC Welbeck (hopefully) and then off to uni, and i dont even plan to take a car to either of them. this decision was helped by the fact that welbeck dont allow student cars on site!

so yes, hopefully a few years of "experience" will drop the insurance before i get it all to myself! in the mean time, mom will probably continue to use it, as a second car.

Hi Richard, I guess you have tried the breaker next to the hotel on the weedon road in Dav? - If they're no good I have used www.harburylane-breakers.co.uk/ in the past they are a good old fashioned 'scrap-yard' and not too far from you.

Cheers,
Pip
