Default Tank filling tube

So.. its time to show my incompetence yet again

for some time now, after filling up, she smelled of petrol for few hours.

now, on usual day i dont fill all that often- every 2-3 weeks, so not a big deal..

supected air return hose on the filling line or something like that as every time i was working inder, i was checking- all dry and sound.

but today, as i was waiting to pay at stations till i looked towards the car to see a small stain developing underneath.

yup.. my puppy leaves stains on petrol stations carpets!

but only when filling..

so, as my other post stated- i was playing with Vida today, i had also a look at tank assembly

prome suspect is no 23 on attached drawing.

now the question: do i actually have to remove whole tank to get to it?

Vida isnt helpful with this specific issue..

(whoa... trouble adding graphics.. trying!)

The short answer is yes........and a thundering pain it is.

I asked my friendly mechanic to do the same repair in early December, he had the car for a few hours from 8am, as well as my Haines and the VIDA "how to": I just didn't have the time or any suitable jack/gearbox stand to support the tank.

At 10.30 am he phoned me to tell me that in his opinion given that you not only had to remove/drop the rear subframe and the suspension crossbeam & etc and at least partially dislocate the ageing exhaust system it would have taken him a at least a day to do and I might then have to replace the exhaust system as well if it fractured.

He told me that given the age of my V70 (Sept 2001) it wasn't worth spending 6 to 8 hours of his labour on something that wouldn't be found on an MOT.

He only charges around £150 a day so I thought that if he was willing to forgo what was relatively easy work for him that his common sense advice was probably correct. From a safety point of view he wondered just how many V70's involved in accidents turned over allowing the tube to leak fuel - he had a point.

In the US this particular part was subject to a recall for replacement..........I just wonder if as a group we put a little pressure on Volvo UK whether or not they might reconsider their previous decisions re this safety/life threatening issue.......after all it only took 150 or so Ford fires to correct a similar issue!

I had this on mine a few years ago. Crawling under the car, I could see it, but couldn't get to it, so luckily, decided to take it to a Bulgarian run place down the road, where I watched 2 guys struggle for an hour and a half to do it.

On the ramps, it wasn't so bad, but they ended up dropping the sub frame at the rear while leaving the front bolts slack and going in from the back, but I was very glad I didn't try it myself!

I think there was a recent thread on here where someone had changed there pipe by taking off the rear arch cover and going in from the side?

They have sold over 200, which kind of tells a tale!

I too remember that post, I've done a site search and found this
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=284237

which I'm sure is the one you are referring to - many thanks GeorgeandKira et al, looks to be a common sense way forward.....but I still think if it is subject to a recall in the US then it should be a worldwide recall without time limit on safety grounds.
I'm going to phone a couple of Volvo dealers and get some insider info if at all possible. I'll post anything relevant/updates etc in due course.

I just had this issue on my 2002 V70

Bought the car on Xmas Eve, but seller didn't mention the corroded filler pipe.
So I promptly flooded a petrol station with litres of fuel

Tried to fix it myself but I don't have a ramp or a lift.
And I was 200 miles from home...

My local garage (PTA in Bromley) were awesome.
They obtained the part (£10) and fitted it (a further £110).

And now I can fill the tank instead of the forecourt

Bromley, you say..

How long did they keep the car for?

Are we definitely talking about the same bit of pipe?
It's about 5" or 6" long, maybe 1.5" diameter.

Mine only leaked during the filling of petrol; and the fuel dribbled down either side of the o/s rear suspension.

Anyway...PTA Garage, they had the car once, for the day, as they diagnosed what it was. No charge for this.

Once they had the (Volvo supplied) replacement pipe in their hands, they had the car for a half day to do the job. Took them 90 mins apparently.

Ah...I just thought. Mine is a Bi-fuel V70...so the (much smaller) petrol tank is in a different place than a regular petrol V70.

Maybe that made it easier, maybe not?

FWIW...I was glad to be nowhere nearby as they somehow removed and replaced the rusted on bolts that hold on the guard plate that protects the LPG tank!

It is this bit that joins the lower end of the down pipe from the fuel filler port under the fuel flap to tank connection tube.

Its part number 253 on the diagram below.
