V50 read/write ECU?
Hi
I'm sorry if this is already covered, but I don't really know what to search for in terms of manufacturers of equipment etc. and have a question about what I need as a bare minimum to make a backup of my ECU-data, and even write it back again. There's actually two reasons why I want to know. 1. I have a tuned map in my ECU, and dealers aren't always listening too closely (selective hearing?) when you ask them NOT to install any new software during services, so I would like to store a backup of mine just in case this happens so that I can replace it without any further ado. 2. These units does from time to time die, and I know that Volvo isn't exactly going to be offering a replacement for cheap, maybe even much more than the car is worth. However, I wouldn't feel good about scrapping a perfectly driveable car only because someone decided you shouldn't replace ECU. I have read about those being able to recover from this, provided they had a backup of their current ECU and thus would be able to "clone" it using a harvested one. I am not interested in modifying the software myself, as this is better left to those who know what they're doing, simply just a backup/restore. I also have another question that is not related to this. Is it a known fault that the DIM sometimes reports manipulated mileage even if such event has NOT taken place? I've seen this on my car (I know for 100% sure that noone has ever tampered with it) and another V50. What was a common denominator was whacky connections to/from the CEM. Did the CEM and ECM get out of sync because they lost connection? A bit curious about this, especially since such an error code would be EXTREMELY bad on our MOT equivalent and I'd like to be able to explain it if it ever occurs again. Hope this was not too much of a read and that it is not out of scope for this forum. Also in case it's of importance, the V50 is a MY08 1.6D with a D4164T engine. |

Hi, I cant help with the ecu back up but as regards to mileage (see my post "mot fail help ")
From what i gather the ecu will always keep a record of the actual mileage but if you put in another dim - instrument cluster the shown mileage will always be which ever is the highest.
