That sounds very similar to my issue. I have just started to get a very quiet 'thump' noise in my V50 that is only noticeable on a very smooth road surface. I thought it sounded like a tyre defect as I have had a couple in the wife's S40 but a mechanic friend had a drive and said he thinks it is the driveshaft bearing just starting to fail but I have 6+ months before it will be an issue so he will sort it during the next service.

Hey. Nah it hasn't been sorted yet as i've been swamped with work and just simply not had the time. The car is booked in next week so hopefully it will get sorted. I've tried to narrow it down myself. The noise doesn't go when I dip the clutch or isn't louder while accelerating, is the same whether i'm in gear or coasting in neutral, so in my head this hopefully eliminates a driveshaft (although I could obviously be wrong but my logic is that it would sound worse under hard acceleration/while generally in gear under load if it was a shaft).

I'm thinking a hub might be the next thing to look at. Someone mentioned maybe a bent steering rack or something worn on the rack but the car drives straight and true so I'm tentatively ignoring this suggestion for now.

Will keep you updated in the week

Thanks for the update.

I did not think you could just change the bearings? I thought they were part of the hub on these cars??

Anyway, I have new shocks, top mounts, top mount bearings, drop links, hubs and wishbones to fit next week. Hopefully after all that lot it will sort it!

I will keep you up to date😉

I don't know if it varies from model to model but they've definitely been changed haha. Let's see who gets it fixed first

Quick update: the garage has had it today and say the noise may be coming from the gearbox. Possibly the bearings where the driveshaft goes into the box.

I'll keep you posted

That will be interesting as I have an auto and you have a manual I believe. I am definitely leaning towards bearing on mine, should be doing the work tomorrow or Thursday.

Likewise I will
Let you know the outcome.

Will be interesting to see if this is the cause....and hopefully not an expensive repair!
