Default Catalytic Converter - Volvo or Aftermarket ??

Greetings Friends,

Re: 2001, S-40 Petrol, Turbo, 140,000 miles on the clock

Is it time to bury the old bird or make the repairs ?

The Catalytic Converter code is the biggie if I get a Genuine Volvo Cat = $1,000us for the part.

Most forum folks say an aftermarket Cat will be fine for ~ $300

** I can deal with the timing belt at $1,200 by the Dealer specialist as a routine maintenance
But – add another
** $800 for a new VVT hub / pulley, includes all seals on that side of the engine
** possible oxygen / Lambda sensors
** Rack/ steering boots
** Sway bar bushing = need to remove the subframe to replace
** Catalytic Converter as above
** I can repair most of the above except the Timing belt + V V T Hub, Cat

So = Is it time to bury the old bird or make the repairs ?

Comments appreciate

Tom in Carolina, USA

Details for those who like them

V V T Pulley is leaking oil; Due for a timing belt – last one ten years ago, will do all the seals on the timing belt side

Getting these codes for two years – on for a while, clear codes, off for a month or two
P0420 = Catalyst System efficiency System below threshold Bank 1
P0130 2 circuit bank 1 sensor 1
P0015 = Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing Over Retarded Bank 1

Recent Replacements = Entire PCV system, plugs, Coil Packs, two years using Mobil 1 High Mileage 5/30 Full Synthetic , Ignition wiring harness = cured sputtering engine, Exhaust flex pipe, fuel pressure regulator, and extra points for driver's side window regulator, Clean out: VVT solenoid , Mass Air Flow sensor and a few other small things

The main thing is... Do you think it's worth it ?
Those quotes are a lot higher than we would pay here in UK !
$1200 ( or about £900) for a timing belt swap.. ouch !
If the cat has not started breaking up, i would be tempted to try some sort of cat cleaner before laying out for a new cat ?

Default Buy Volvo Genuine or Aftermarket Catalytic Converter ??

Hey Magnuz,

Thanks for your comments.

My thought is the CAT has NOT starting breaking up - I don't hear any noise that folks talk about on the internet.

I am only driving 7,000 per year and the past two years only 4,124 per year - just around town with very short trips down the street to shop. The gas mileage meter says my average speed is usually about 20 miles per hour

So there is probably build up happening

I am going to start adding Red Line fuel injector cleaner - about 1.5 ounces every tank to see if that helps keep the system clean. And - doing an Italian Tune UP every so often.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

Sometimes the P0420 code is caused by a faulty lambda sensor, the first o2 sensor in the exhaust, at the manifold. I'm about to change my o2 sensor in my saxo. Hope this helps.

As Magnuz says I think I'd be tempted to try a product like cataclean[maybe that redline stuff you mention does the same job?]As for replacement cats[I'll probably be shot for this]but the previous owner of my V70 had an aftermarket one fitted shortly before he sold it on to the bloke I bought it from and I've had the car 3yrs now[so the cat will be about 4yrs old] and I've never had any problems with it.

Hi Dippydog, On recent mot my car failed on CO levels. Several people on here reco`d Forte advanced formula gas treatment. I poured a bottle in the tank and it seemed to clean out the system as following re-test it passed.

Hey Guys,

Been about 5 weeks since my original post.

The mileage meter on my dash says I average 22 mph per tank of gas.
90 % is driving up the street to the store / around town
5-10% is on the highway at 60+ mph

CEL = Check Engine Light / codes appearing

*** If I drive in Gear D = drive, I get more frequent CEL light "on" status; codes =
P0130 2 circuit bank 1 sensor 1
P0015 = Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing Over Retarded Bank 1

*** If I drive in Gear 2 or 3 on the automatic stick shift for short
trips to the store, No Codes !! Driving this way will even turn off
the CEL on the dashboard ! Usually I have to clear the codes with my OBD reader.
*** I changed my oil and this also turned off the CEL
see attached pic for the crud in the oil filter,
shiney = light reflection, not metal flakes
Oil change = 2,946 miles and 11 months 1 week = not much driving !

Go Figure as they say here in Carolina = doesn't make any sense.
I don't care as long as I can get the car inspected in October.

Also - no more Code P0420 = Catalyst System efficiency System below threshold Bank 1
since the mechanic at the dealership unhooked the battery for about an hour and this
cleared all the codes

Thanks for reading and your comments !
