Clunk fixed - thanks estew!
Seems I'm late to this party, but thanks estew for solving this one for me. My clunk happened a lot as I do a reverse right angle turn up into a sloping driveway every time I come home. If I got close to left lock while reversing the clunk would happen just like you described.
I'd already replaced inner and outer track rods, which removed a little bit of clunking, but not the big one. Replaced front rotors and discs this weekend and while I was at it removed the nuts from the rear M14 bolt you describe that holds the control arm to the subframe. There was a small amount of red threadlocker (only about one 360° thread-full). I cleaned this out, replaced with a fair bit more medium strength threadlocker, tightened them up to 105Nm with the torque wrench, then the extra 90° rotation as described in the Haynes manual, then went about another 90°. Thank heavens for breaker bars! (Had to temporarily remove a little plastic and foam thingo above the nut to get the breaker bar and socket in there easily.) So far so good - three drives and no more steering clunk reversing uphill in left lock. |

suspension arms are stretch bolts - single use
Hi folks,
similar issues to you all. Turned out the when the suspension arms were replaced they had re used the bolts. Despite fully tightening they they continued to stretch (rear ones) A full set of 6 new bolts from Volvo for £12 and it was sorted.

Bolt sizes
Hi
Sorry I cant put my hand on that receipt. There is one large bolt that passes through the rear bush, secured by a nut on top. this was the one that was getting loose, even though it had been torqued up then angle tightened as per the spec. There are two smaller ones that fix the front wishbone mounting to the chassis rails. These were fine but I replaced them anyway as I was doing the others. The dealer located them straight away from my reg number and they were next day delivery. Binty
