The engine should rest (not ideal) on the NS top engine mount and the OS gearbox mount and rotate backwards a couple of cm once you remove the support bracket. Ideally you should have an engine support hoist/crane/block & tackle of some sort.
To be honest, I thought I could just remove the bracket and that would be it without touching the top mounts. I could just about bring myself to try what you said if the only risk was an engine falling out of place. I'm a little more concerned that I would end up injuring myself though. Do tell me if I am blowing things out of proportion here because that sump really needs to come off somehow! Thanks.

The engine will be supported just fine without the cross member in place. There are mounts to the left and right of the engine that will support it. The cross member is heavy but having taken it off at least 5x on mine, it’s not an issue. I would put a jack underneath it so that it can be lowered gently but beyond that just go for it!

That sounds promising! Thank you for letting me know. Time to drop yet another 5 litres of oil in the name of getting the job done properly....

One positive note - I have driven the car a bit since changing the PCV and the engine management light went off yesterday. The only two codes now are P0171 and P0172 which could be caused by that pipe down to the sump being blocked if I am not mistaken. I'm still going to do a compression test on all of the cylinders and hope it isn't those valve stem seals.

Further update: after seeing the engine management light go off, I did the glove test again and it's sucking! I think driving the car has shifted whatever was left in those lower pipes. It's not ideal but I assume another oil change within the next 1000 miles would be sensible or do I still need to drop that oil pan? All I'm getting now is a bit of smoke under deccelaration from motorway speed and error codes P0171 and P0172.

Thanks all for your help so far. I'll have to join the club and try to attend some events after this!

I pressure tested the cylinders:

148, 138, 132 and 130.
