The real annoyance with it, is that is only flashes up when I do a hard lock left turn.

As soon as the steering wheel turns back, it goes out instantly.

I think unless it gets significantly worse I may just park this for now and reinvestigate it closer to the MOT in October.

It's either bcm-109 or sas-109 then yes it's contact reel as previously stated easy job to replace

I didn't get the actual codes from the garage, but they quoted three issues

a mechanical failure from SAS
a communication issue from SAS
a miscellaneous issue from SAS

They basically said I need a new SAS.

Haven't got the money at the moment to do it now, and two hard lock left turns this morning did not pop the message up, so it is a non issue at the moment for me.

I have other pressing things to spend my hard earned money on.

When mine started to go it was only when I left the car on full left lock. After about 6 months it would do it left on the dead ahead as well when left. Eventually the clock spring went and due to circumstances I couldn do anything about it and this caused the SRS module to get blocked with the messages and I had to get the software reloaded on it after changing the clock spring.
Basically from my experience you can get away with leaving it but as soon as you get a permanent message get it changed.

I have purchased a new clock spring off Ebay for £215. I got lucky in that Ebay had a 10% discount off anything mechanical, so i thought why not.

It appears to be a reputable UK Volvo parts seller.

I just need to find some time to do it one morning when things are nice and quiet.

OK, I have now got around to fitting my new SAS, but have one issue.

I marked up the steering wheel position, and made sure the wheels were straight, or to be fair as straight as I feel they can be.

I have done this twice now, replaced the steering wheel on the mark and with the wheels straight.

But each time I have driven off, the wheel is slightly off to the left.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

That will probably be a tracking issue. Was it straight before you started?
As long as the steering wheel is close to central that is OK. The clock spring just needs to have full travel each way.

Back tracking a bit but I'm glad you had the codes read before you spent any money - the problem could also have been a wheel bearing...

I THINK they were straight, I followed a guide from Swedespeed so don't think I would have missed this bit. As far as I know, the tracking has never been done, but I am planning to get two new front tyres within the next week or so, so I will get this done at the same time.

Then I will see how it looks.

Worst case, I will pop it again and try to line it up again.

As an added safety measure after fitting the part and everything back in place, it is good practice not to sit in the drivers seat when first turning on the ignition in case the airbag deploys, reach in from behind the drivers or passenger seat and turn ignition on. This will protect you if it goes off.
Volvo use this method after refitting airbags.
