Took car to dealer with new downloaded maps on USB stick, which on inserting USB into car prompts for licence code no entry. Dealer rep went and obtained code, which still didn't work. After phone call to HQ was told that car needs a software update, but that at present Volvo were not recommending installing this update as it was buggy and may cause problems! Fixed version said to be available "fairly soon", and they will call me when it is available.....

Yes, the update you need is what's called 1100 when you look at the info in the system. It disappeared quite quickly from Volvo's accessory web site, so that could be because they find issues with it.
I have it, and from time to time (very randomly), I have my infotainment system restarting, for no apparent reason. Maybe it's this software... Let us know when you get a new one. You should be able to update from DVD, though. Now you already have the code. The DVD packs are the same for all cars, it's just the code that's individual. |

There is no "version" on the updates , the only way you know they are up to date is when there are no new updates available when the car is connected to the diagnostic machine . Updates are issued quite often so by now there may be a few modules which are not on the latest software , they would be updated at the next service free .

The Bluetooth and navigation softwares are different, as they do have versions you can read yourself in the car.
Not everything is updated during regular service. It depends on how long time is needed for the update. |

I bought my 2012 XC70 on a one year Selekt warranty which was the best second hand car warranty I've experienced, however the software upgrade for the sat nav which would have made it capable of uploading new maps for free, was not applied and I had to find out about it myself and ask for it to be done and then a charge of £60, IIRC, was quoted. As it turned out the sat nav would not accept the upgrade and was deemed to be faulty. Selekt replaced the sat nav free of charge and of course, operating software had to be loaded to the latest standard. So in the end I got the whole lot free but the dealer had either not attempted to load the latest software or had and when it didn't take, just failed to notify me. When Selekt were paying them for their activity they did what I would have expected them to have done at their own expense before they sold me the car. But perhaps I'm just a bit cynical about second had car dealers, Volvo or otherwise!

I looked into the sat nav update for my 2012xc, after some discussion with the dealer and their refering back to volvo i was told that there is a hard / soft ware compatibility issue in the modules used in the 2012 v/xc70s that lead to the module 'bricking'. Only fix is a new module, which gets you the latest v1100 software.
Dealer said unfortunately its Russian roulette if your car has a non compatable module. So volvo not recommending upgrade and 'may' be working on a fix.

OK. In that case mine isn't that affected, since it does work. I just get an occasional restart of the infotainment.

What do you mean by "it does work"? My original Sensus Sat Nav worked very well and its only failing was an inability to accept the "free map upload" software V.1100. If I hadn't wanted to upload free maps I would never have found out that the unit was incompatible with V.1100 and the car would have been out of warranty and I'd not have got a free replacement. I got lucky. Have you tried to have V.1100 uploaded?

I do have version 1100. And it works. It's not bricked. But I do get an occasional restart of the system now and then. Maybe that's due to the bugs mentioned here.
