Default plastic engine cover can you do without?

hi everyone
now this may sound like an absolute beginners dafty question but :

my v 70's a mark 3 2.4 D5 diesel engine and Ive only just acquired her
she didnt come with the large plastic coverall that sits over the main head of the engine block

my car is an ex nhs usage paramedic fast response vehicle so shes been driven around like lightening
here's the question
is this plastic cover an essential part that I should have in place ?
lest risk malfunction or possible damage heat changes if it isnt there etc

do I need to shell out and get a new one fast or can this wait ?
do people take them off sometimes as an optional is it just purely cosmetic shield for engine area ?

It absorbs a few db of noise but that's all it does unless you count the cosmetic aspect. It's certainly far from essential

im inclined to go for every plausible part being a newbie and glowing with volvo excitement but the multitude of service/maintenance swop outs has seriously emptied my fleebag wallet so an immediate purchase isnt possible for a bit
so your saying dont worry nothings going to go kebang as a result of not being there ?

It is only a cover to make the engine look pretty. Does nothing else at all.

It is for noise absorbtion and pedestrian safety , if you knock someone over the alloy bonnet is soft , you don't want to cause them any more injury by their head hitting all that jagged stuff on top the engine ...
