Default engine mount should i remove for belt change?

newbie question two from me this week

heres my engine bay mount on the v70 mk 3 2009 d5 engine
im going to be changing out belts water pump and power steering pump

this big ol badboy upper left engine mount (seen in picture directly by power steering bottle ) seems to be in way of everything and blocking easy access from above
Do i remove it first to start work ? if so do i need to give support to the engine from underneath by jacking it to compensate for lack of mount ? if i just undo it am i going to stress weight on engine etc
can jobs be done from underside leaving mount in place ?
or is it simple ?just undo then do back up (correct torques withstanding off course)

You need to put in a closing square bracket "]" after the last "[/IMG" so that you get this:

Half-way down the plastic timing belt cover, there's a threaded stud that sticks through from the engine block, to fasten a hose clamp in place.

I had real problems removing the timing belt cover because of this stud, and had to really lever the cover outwards while removing it. It was the hardest part of the whole job on mine !

Default engine jack for mounts where?

watched one of Sirobbs vids on youtube channel and he changing out his lower mounts and he removes lower gearbox mount then jacks gearbox attached to engine in order so he can raise engine to get mounts out

is this what i should do to avoid busting bottom of engine sump ? ie in order to safely remove the top mount in picture (original thread question)
support the engine here ( on gearbox ) or
just have block of wood directly under engine block jacked to take weight if thats all then im safe to remove top mount and get on with it am I ?
or is this going to result in damage going for simple block of wood under it

I know this sounds like serious idiot stuff to those who are day in day out on these engines but so dont want to make a simple move without the clarity for risk of doing massive damage i cant afford at minute
im hanging on this ditty

I used a large bit of wood to spread the load of the engine and put the trolley jack under that

thanks for confirmation on that bobbsy
yes Iv'e been re-going totally through the youtube vids reconsulting my Haynes and theres nothing but go for it is there its go carefully and use the wood placed appropriately and I guess just take the load weight dont go mad jacking it right up with the other mounts undone
gawd i feel such a plonker for even asking such low level commonsense questions but thanks loads for a confirm i appreciate it

to anyone reading this who strongly thinks : this guy obviously hasnt a clue what he's doing he should be going to a proper garage mechanic
well for one I super respect time served mechanics who have to do it on the clock to make a living and in a perfect world if money wasn't a problem at moment id be taking it to my local independent for sure as he's got a great reputation (and no doubt will be over future issues that require specialist knowledge ) but then again its high time i learnt and nows the time seein as im dead scared to drive her anywhere till ive swopped out belts pump etc so thanks every and any little tit bit is hugely appreciated

No, I think you're just being cautious, which is really good

I was less cautious when I did mine, and just rested the trolley jack under the sump. I used the jack to raise the engine to help remove the LHS mount components. And I then recall lowering it to gain access to other parts of the engine. It didn't cause any problems for me, but I can see how a block of would resting against a section of the engine block would have been better. Just make sure when raising/lowering you're not putting tension on any wires, pipes of linkages.

I did do a write-up that you might find useful:
