Default Volvo S80 D5252T stalling

Hi everyone,

I am puzzled about an intermittent bucking/stalling problem on my 320000 mile 1999 S80 with Audi 5 Cylinder D5252T engine, MSA 15.8, manual gearbox.

The problem only happens when the car is rolling at relatively low rpm, often with the foot completely off the gas pedal. What's especially strange is it mostly happens when turning right.

When the car is stopped it idles pretty well, with a slight hesitation from time to time, but overall the idle is rather stable. The engine always (re)starts easily when it is hot or cold. When the engine is bucking there is a lot of smoke that comes out of the exhaust and a strong smell of diesel, like the fuel is not being burned properly. The lambda symbol on the dashboard is constantly on, and when reset turns back on very quickly.

This bucking/stalling problem mostly happens when turning at a low speed, without giving gas, but also sometimes when accelerating in a straight line, the car jolts with a very jerky acceleration.

The injection pump has been replaced last year due to another problem, I was hoping it would solve this one as well but it didn't.

Ever since I had this car, there has been a small problem of losing power when driving on the highway (for instance on a steep incline with the cruise control on, the car got into limp mode until the next startup) which I suspect might be related to EGR.

Do you think this stalling problem comes from a fouled/broken injector or from the EGR ?

From your description a few things spring to mind but first can you read off the stored diagnostic trouble codes?

Or before you even do that check the length of rubber hose going from the MAP sensor (located on the right strut tower) to the inlet manifold isn't perished/damaged. When turning right the engine will lean left slightly and stress that hose and, if damaged, will allow unmetered air to enter the manifold. Replace if in doubt. Check DTCs.
