Default Rear fog lights???

Daft question... one or two?

Just bought 2010 active, one rear fog light on off side. Any ideas if this is the only light, or have I got a bulb blown on near side?

Thanks!

That's right, there's just one on the offside.

If I remember correctly, Volvo do not consider having 2 rear fog lights as safe, because they could dazzle following drivers and also make the brake lights less obvious.

Easy to retro fit ... LHD rear foglamp, harness and bulb ... about 20mins to fit (the harness under the bracket is a pain) ... approx £40 in parts from Volvo, no software needed.

Hope it helps

Truckbus,

Do you happen to have the Part Numbers for those - I would like to add the other Fog Light ?

.... I assume the plug to connect the harness to is fairly obvious once the original housing is removed ?

Thanks,

I'm not at home at the moment Coconut, but I'll see if I can find the invoice ... FRF supplied the parts, you just need to stress you want the fog light from a left hand drive XC90, as the UK version is only a reflector .. the harness and bulb are the same as the UK parts ... the lamp pops out and the wiring is under the trim panel (just unclips) above the bumper (on the facelift cars.)

Robin

Cheers TruckbusUK :-)

I'll give Rufe a call ( Now what was that discount code again ? !)

Don't rush to sort the Part Numbers - I'm sure he'll know what is needed, although they might still be useful for anyone else considering this.

Regards,

Robin/Coconut,

Interesting as yesterday there was a 130 car pile up in kent in thick fog. Always wandered why only one fog light since if you are in the outside lane of a motorway then it doesn't do much if traffic in the middle and slower lane catch up rapidly.

Anyway, opened the right side fog and noticed wiring goes upwards. When opened left side there is a hole where the cabling should go based on right side, but cannot see how this unclips to reveal the internal wiring connection.

Any help appreciated

Cheers

My thoughts go out to the injured, and family & friends of those involved in the Isle of Sheppey incident.

The reason that there is only only one Fog Light fitted is quite simple - that is the minimum legal requirement !
It is therefore cheaper to build a car with one Fog lamp, bulb holder and wiring,
and just have a "dummy" reflector unit on the other side. There is a legal requirement for 2 reflectors !

Personally, if I'm driving in Pea Soup Fog, I want as much light at the back of my car as possible,
so I plan on fitting the "extra" Fog Light.

I'm not concerned at other suggestions that this "might make it more difficult for following motorists
to notice when the Brake lights are applied" - I personally think this is a myth propogated by the vehicle manufacturers
to try and justify the cost cutting ( see above ) - I will already be driving slowly BECAUSE IT'S FOGGY
and I want to be as visible as possible BEFORE I start to slow down even more if I apply the brakes !

In any event, the XC 90 also has a High Level brake light in addition to the two "standard" ones,
so it should be obvious to anyone following that the Brakes have been applied.

I only use the rear Fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced by fog or spray,
not just at the first sign of drizzle like a lot of the muppets you see, who then don't realise that
they can press their Fog Light switch again to turn them off, when the drizzle has stopped !

So, I just order the parts from FRF Volvo Swansea using the Forum member discount code of "C5"
and the parts : LHD Fog Lamp 312313647 for my 2008 model
( there is a different version which can be determined by quoting your Chassis Number ),
& Wiring Loom 8693010, came to just £39.42 - delivered !

I'm hoping that it won't be too difficult to find the other end of the wiring loom to plug into -
TruckbusUK - Can you shed any more (fog) light on where the connection plug is hidden -
You mention "the harness under the bracket is a pain" ???

Just as an aside on my old S60 it was LOT easier to fix - the Nearside lamp unit had a plastic blanking cover
over where the Fog Light would be on a LHD car, but all the wiring was already there,
all it needed was the plastic bit to broken out and a new bulb socket fitted into it !

OK, I'm away from home so I cant take pics at the moment ... so here is a really crap explanation ....

Directly under the rear light cluster there is a plastic body panel (MY2007 on,) this needs to be removed to access the plug that the wiring harness joins to the main loom.
The harness then goes under a black bumper bracket/mounting, and comes out where the fog lamp/lens is mounted on the bumper.

From memory it may be easier to remove the panel under the light cluster, if you remove the rear light, you will then see the mounting clips and honest it really just pops out ... well maybe pry to release the clips ( I used my fingers, no tools,) also remove the existing foglight/reflector and it will all be obvious ... if your unsure how the harness routes ... remove the RHS fog lamp ... its the same only a miror image.

Sorry long winded, and pictures would have helped, but honest its a really easy job, save routing the cable harness under the black bracket .... a pain as its so tight and I didnt want to dismantle half the rear of the car.

hope the explanation helps
