Erratic wipers

2007 V70, has devloped higly erratic wipers. Intermittant rarely works at all, other wiper settings erratic, sometimes go really fast, then stop, restart slow etc. Increasingly risky going out on wet days. Passed MoT 3 weeks ago and behaved perfectly on that day!
Any suggestions how to recover normal wiper behaviour?

Remove the wiper stalk, open it and clean the contacts inside. Was that easy on my Xc90.

The intermittent position just goes to auto wipers on mine and that's really erratic can't get rid out it..would prefer intermittent
