Without doubt the 8 Speed (Japanese) Aisin Autobox is an absolute peach with siky smooth changes. My XC60 Vea has now completed over 90k with a free fix on the EGR being the only fault. I do a lot of towing so a fluid change every 2 years is required. If not towing Volvo now recommend Fluid change ever 5 years.
This gearbox is used in the Lexus range amongst others and feedback other forums is very favourable for this particular 8 speed.

For the Aisin gearbox oil change, where are you getting this done? My local dealer was still saying sealed for life a few months ago. What sort of price am I looking at?

My D4 VEA is coming up to 58k/5 years old.

I have it done at my local Volvo main dealer. Having bought the XC from new I took out the 5 year Service deal for the bargain price of £500. At year 2 I tried to get the fluid change done as part of the service deal as I tow. They said that as it was not part of the standard service schedule it was not included but agreed to change it at cost which was £160 which I agreed to. When I took it in for its final free 5th year service I was prepared to pay again for the trans fluid change but they told me that Volvo now state that every 5th year the fluid should be changed on all irrespective of towing or not. That being the case they said it was part of the free service. It's the first time I have had a nice surprise from a main dealer!
The term 'sealed for life' is widely held on many forums to be a completely hollow claim.

Hi, do you have the D4 and is this classed as semi automatic or just automatic

The question really is do you need AWD?

If so - you are stuck with the 6-speed Aisin Warner TF80 (and 5 cylinder engines)

However if you just need FWD - then later model 4-cylinder cars had the 8-speed AW box.

Yes the D4 2ltr 181hp front wheel drive Auto 8 speed with flappy paddles which were a free option, which I have probably used twice in 5 years. More out of curiosity than need!

Thanks for the info.. I never adhere to sealed for life, or sealed for warranty....

Some people will think it's a negative others not so. I have a V70 with the 6-speed Aisin and 5 cylinder engine. I specifically didn't want the newer 4 cylinder VEA engine because of the problems with it (see long running thread). Although this is meant to be solved now I don't think we will know long term for sure for a few more years. As I keep my cars quite a while I was not going to take any chances. I also do quite a lot of short trips which again is meant be more of a problem on the VEA engine.

So what am I missing? Well probably the a smoother 8-speed gearbox but the 6-speed is fine. I believe the VEA engine should also do more MPG although reading through the forums how much more I am not really sure, some people seem suggest it's no more economical. The 5 cylinder engine in 215BHP form is quite economical provided you drive it relatively gently, push it hard and it will guzzle fuel quite happily, although nothing like the T5 I had before!
