2014 V60 D5 service
Coming up to a year since it was last serviced.
MY14 car on a 13 plate, registered September 2013 so its 5 and half years old. Current mileage is 52,000. I have 5 stamps in the book so far. I purchased it this time last year, so I'm not sure if the aux belt was done at the 3rd service or not, nothing on the stamp about it, but no other paper work with the car. Is it due the 52,000 mile service inc Aux belt, or the 6 year 108,000 mile inc timing belt service? Called my local dealer who quoted 6th service but no belts at £430, then the aux belt when I questioned and put the price to £520 and then timing belt when questioned again upping cost to £900. Also stated the fuel filter would be changed, but that isn't listed on the service price indicator. Left me a little unsure what service my vehicle needs Can anyone advise further?

Try calling whoever did the services and ask nicely, pretty please, and all that.

My local dealer suggested changing the aux belt at 45k as they had had some failures before the 52k. This can lead to cambelt failure and a consequent big bill, but it doesn't seem to be UK wide Volvo information. Cost around £100 all inclusive

I guess I'm querying whether the belts are age dependent or mileage dependent? Does age come before mileage? Or vice versa?
The Aux belt isn't expensive for the peace of mind it gives, but it is another £400 for the cam belt, which is a significant cost if it doesn't actually need doing yet. Although for peace of mind it may be worth it.

Timing belt is fine 108,00 miles or 10 years, whichever is reached first, although personally I would change it earlier, not they are common to fail but I still wouldn't feel safe leaving it till the max time/mileage, but I would say doing it now is probably not needed, however should it fail i'm also going to point out is officially due on the 6 year service!
After seeing repairs bills of the damage after an aux belt/tensioner fail I would just get it done. If I was buying a car and wasn't sure if it had been done I would just do it. When we sell a car and we are not sure of its history and unable to confirm or see non Volvo stamps in the book we tend to change them as we do all warranty work in house and really don't want to pay the repairs for that failing! |

The part of me that is thinking I'll be keeping the car for 3-7 years says to get it all done (before prices go up) and then I know its done, can forget about it and its kept in line with Volvo's 6th service guide.
But I also wonder how necessary the timing belt is being 5 years early. Also considering extending my Selekt warranty for another year, which is £600. Expensive month if I do the lot. Or keep the £600 to one side in case I need it and if I don't then I'm £600 better off. Kinda local volvo independent charging £310 for 52k service inc volvo parts. Price too good to be true if anyone is more in the know than I am? Feel the dealer won't price match due to the distance away it is.

It's due the 6 year service unfortunately. Always age or mileage, whichever comes sooner.
Cambelts are a tricky one - anybody who spends time on car forums knows about belt change intervals, and the damage if one breaks, and gets them done. However the majority of people have never heard of a cambelt and I reckon most cars on the road over 10 years old are still merrily going along on the original belts with their owners none the wiser. My local independent garage owner is a "cambelt denier" and his 22 year old Ford van is still on the original belt! You would be pretty gutted if the belt went in a 2013 D5 though. Worth factoring in the volvo breakdown cover too. All breakdown covers are far from equal and the volvo one is brilliant - the undertray fell off my V40 and the technician they sent out had all the right fittings in his van, spent over an hour doing a free full repair - that would be have been about £150 in labour time if I'd nursed it to the nearest dealers instead. So if I were you, i would: - Do the full 6 year service, belts and all. If you don't do it this year, you'll do it next, and why risk it? - do it at an independent. the only advantage of dealers for me is the breakdown cover for 12 months and getting a new car to hoon around in for a day (I pick a day with maximum work mileage!) - Get the selekt cover, on the monthly payment (no more expensive) - get the breakdown as part of the selekt cover. - if you still have it at 12 years, I would be rolling the dice at that age and never changing the belt again. |
