Default Night driving any glasses to protect from LED headlights ?

I dont know if its me or many others of you but i find some car headlights coming towards be seriously dazzle me these days. Its as if some new cars headlights are brighter than full beam yet thats now their normal light output ( theyre not using full beam ) this is extremely dangerous and causes accidents.

Im wondering if any of you know of any glasses you can wear to protect from bright lights yet dont cause you to see less of the road on your side.

please advise me
thanks

Work for me

I suggest you consider Zeiss DriveSafe prescription lenses: I've heard good things about these.

A second vote for Zeiss here. I'm on my second pair and subjectively would say they reduce glare by about a third. Not cheap - budget around £500 for photochromic varifocals in a £100 frame - but well worth it in my view!

Regards. John.

I have a couple of pairs of cheepo ones off the bay, I keep a pair in each car. 'er indoors also has some in her car and we find them more than adequate. No need to spend a lot of money on them. I have the normal frames, 'er indoors has the clip on ones as she wears glasses for driving.

Very dark sunglasses.

Side effect is that you still cannot see the road ahead, but at least you have a chance of not burning your retinas out.

Default Why should we need them?

I’ve been driving for over 50 years without a problem until the last few years. I believe that the predominance of the upgraded lights like HIDs is the problem. That and the availability of non road legal bulbs of 100watts etc. The buyers of them aren’t inclined to take any notice of the warning on the packaging and aren’t concerned about the effect on other road users. What happens at the MOT I wonder as I have no experience of ever having the wattage of my lighting being checked. Are they working and beam aim yes, but that’s all.

A good point, 'Ian21401'. I too have been driving for more than 50 years and you are right - this is a recent phenomena.

I'd put it down to my eyes deteriorating with age - although I still exceed the minimum standard required for driving. I always ask my optician whenever I have my eyes tested and I have worn glasses since before I went to school!

I have a fairly complex prescription, and together with the aforementioned photochromic and varifocal lenses, my specs were never going to be cheap, but I consider the extra for the Zeiss coating money well spent. Although it is something that I now avoid doing whenever possible, they give me much greater confidence on those occasions when I do have to drive at night.

'ITSv40's suggestion is a good one if you are fortunate enough not to require prescription lenses, but obviously would not work for me. While Paul's (GVM) provides a cheaper alternative, I have never felt comfortable with over-glasses or clip-ons. I would respectfully suggest to 'ThomasG' that the side effect of not being able to see the road ahead may negate any benefit arising from the anti-dazzle properties of very dark sunglasses!

Regards, John.

Default Wrap around over glasses.

I also have prescription specs. now, varifocals. Probably due to my age, but, upon the advent of VDUs in general use at work in the 80’s my previously A1 eyesight deteriorated rapidly. Notice how many relatively young adults now need specs or contact lenses compared to when I was a lad. I have sun over glasses which I use occasionally but when the sun is high I don’t need them. Probably due to my eyes not being as receptive to light due to my age. I tried the so called “night driving” over glasses some time ago but didn’t continue the experiment. My daughter, however, needs to wear some form of sunglasses virtually all the time she is driving, even when it is simply cloudy.i
