Vehicles categorised as A, B or C require a VIC test before the DVLA will issue a new registration document. This will then be noted on the V5C. See www.dvla.gov.uk for more information on VIC testing.

Basically, Cat A & B are salvage only, cannot be put back on the road again (Infact I think A is squash only), Cat C requires an identity check (VIC test) probably carried at at an MOT station, I'm not sure how mainland works, basically its just too confirm the cars identity, not the repair, but you must show evidence of repair work, Cat D is repair and drive

thanks for the help , im just angry at mo that through no fault of my own , (my car was parked outside my daughters house , alorry has hit it , smashing my wing, bumper ,light, ) the car is 21years old , ive owned it for 15years, and now the insurance company said it to be arite off, and a cat b , i managed to get them to change it to a cat c , but over phone only (i have nothing in writing ) and now i find out i have to pay not only to put right the damage but also to get it inspected after , so i will be out of pocket and through no fault of my own

Hi,

Make sure you put the whole claim inc costs to get it back on the road against said lorry driver.
Then add £1000 to cover loss of NCP/increased insurance due to your claim.

I'm assuming the lorry drivers insurers are paying out, tell them the car is a classic and you wish to keep it on the road, another member went through similar to you after an accident and he argued the toss with the insurance company and they eventually agreed to repair the car.

Default Insurance.

If it is written off to category C = Cat C is where the car is repairable but is not economic to do so. Your insurance will have to look at the vehicle and agree how much money the car was worth before damage which isn't the same amount you have insured the car for. You can argue the toss over this and agree a value which will proabably be between 500 - 1000.

I managed to get 900 for mine.
Even though the write off is not your fault your insurance will increase!

That is unbelievable.... It will be impossible to claim it all back on the lorry driver to repair the car. He will be insured and the insurer will sort it, sadly it will be peanuts (no offence meant) for this car as it's money value to them will be probably no more than about £300 if you are lucky.
Also it is a crazy idea to expect them to up their payout to cover the NCP/increased insurance. This is not how insurance companies work as they know you are just trying to up the claim to cover the excess.

Hi volvo740ndspares
First get everything in writing especially as they originally wanted it to be a cat B.
As when my last 940 got hit by a bus breaking an indicator and scratching the wing. I was told it was a cat D but on the insurance renewal I was asked by my insurer for the details of my new car as the old one was on a cat C and if not VIC checked could no longer be used.
I ended up scrapping a perfectly useable car because of the useless insurance company.
All I can say is if you want it back on the road make sure they send you confirmation of what category they have put it.

Hope this helps
