Default Whine from front end

Hi,

I have started to get a whine from the front end of my C30 1.6 Diesel. It pretty much started overnight. I've checked the tyres, one had a nail in it so got that fixed and also had the bearings and suspension checked with no faults found. The noise starts to become audible around 30mph no matter which gear you're in. I've checked the power steering fluid and all OK. Has any had anything similar that may point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Seems to be a very commnon and very expensive problem with modern day cars, I have had the same problem for years....

finally got around to resolving the issue by opening the passenger door and asking the missus to get out.

Does it also whine when rolling on neutral? Does the noise change when you gently apply brake?

Brimfull: lol...

I tried it, when driving If I take it out of gear and coast it still does it and depressing the clutch makes no difference. As I brake and slow the noise goes to a lower pitch. Seems to be getting louder as the days pass. Not doing many miles just now, maybe 20 to 30 a week.

Brimful: I know the feeling

Power steering pumps can whine especially if they are low on fluid.

Thanks,

I had checked the fluid level yesterday and it looks to be OK. Could it be the water pump?

Not sure about water pumps but from my experience on other cars whines was usually been down to, power steering pumps, gearbox, diffs or Turbo issues

Thanks Brimfull, I'll do some more investigating today. I had a fault on the car a few weeks ago that may well be unrelated where if I accelerated harder up to 2500 RPM it would feel like I'd hit a brick wall and the car would die. It would restart and drive fine again but if you done the same again it would die. Accelerating smoothly wouldn't produce any issues at all. I'm hedging my bets on it being the turbo but fingers crossed it's not.

Sounds like it could be turbo-related. I had a Mercedes with a 3.0v6 Diesel engine that used to do a similar thing. If you booted under 2500 rpm it would go into limp mode. Restart the engine and that would clear the fault until the next time you booted.

It turned out to be a faulty actuator on the turbo and sticking inlet flaps.

Just been to the garage to have it plugged in and coming back as low fuel pressure, no other faults apparent just now. Going to change the fuel filter first to see if that helps then suppose I'll have to start working back from there if no change.
