Default More trouble. Unfortunately serious.

Well after lots of research I have found one guy ( my normal prop supplier) who can supply a new prop for £380 and the OEM supplier who want to look at my old part before rebuilding it.

Therefore I stuck the old prop in the back of the car to take to the OEM facility and after only a couple of miles the gearbox area started making increasingly loud whirring noises which are particularly bad in third and fourth.

Got the car home, up on axle stands and started the engine. No noises, into first gear slight noises, second, a bit louder whirring , into third omg its getting louder and the pitch increases as the wheel speed increases, into fourth and its very loud whirring and sounds terminal in the final drive/ gearbox department.

Personally I think the badly clunking and binding propshaft has broken the final drive/ transfer box as the prop flange coming out of the angle drive just spins freely by hand.

Is this angle drive worth repairing or should I just get a complete replacement box from a breaker.

Cheers,

Tony

Sounds like the spline on the output shaft, if you are lucky it's repairable by it a volvo kit.

Had a think about it overnight and unfortunately I think its time to call it quits on the XC70.

It still looks great for a 51 plate and it has just had its alloy wheel refurbished but I'm looking at a couple of days under the car and a £500 bill for parts alone to restore the complete AWD system.

Time to hit ebay for something to replace it.

In the meantime anyone want a 51 plate,140k, lpg converted and registered, Ocean race edition XC70 with a case of knackered transfer box?

Cheers,

Tony

Car now on ebay spares or repairs starting at £200 but LPG kit has been removed.

Someone is either going to get a bargain to repair or a wealth of parts if they break the car.

I have now defected to a Merc estate so we will see how the Germans compare to the Swedes.

Cheers,

Tony

It sounds very similar to loose propshaft bolts.

I got underneath to have a look and I believe the middle propshaft bearing is on its way out by virtue of the fact that I can grasp the propshaft , move it about 5 mm from side to side just by hand pressure and I can see the rubber mounting bush moving and flexing. This would account of the" groan and thud" I presume.

Given the age of the car and that I am a complete skinflint I am looking for the cheapest way to fix this problem but I still want to keep the AWD functional.

What has everyone else done faced with this situation?

Cheers,

Tony
The noise is coming from the front driveshaft splines where they go into the hubs , Try renewing the bolts which secure them in the centre on the outside , It's very important to torque them correctly and angle torque them .
