Mine is doing this too....

Usually not long after a hot start and it's almost always at low speed just after dipping the clutch e.g changing gear just before a speed bump. Or when about to pull away from a standstill. But it's mostly at low speed as the clutch is pressed.

I find that it wont restart unless I turn the key all the way to the off position, then back on again.

Default V70 D5 2006 engine stalling

Hi,

Looking for some advice please on this topic of stalling,,, I've owned this car for almost 10 years and have always had this very intermittent problem of the engine stalling at low revs and when it does all power is lost, car has to be guided as possible to a safe place to stop - wait for 3 minutes (always) before it will restart. It then runs normally and could run for months before occurring again. It's something to do with fuel system I am sure. Once I put in non-Volvo fuel filter and problem occurred immediately, but it happens also with new Volvo filter. Most recently occurred whilst on motorway doing 50 mph (for the first time) at low revs - very dangerous so this needs to be fixed!

I've read about fuel pressure sensor issues in V70's of this vintage causing what sounds like similar problems but that was for petrol engines I think. Dealer has suggested perhaps in-tank pump. As both of these are upwards of £250 I'm reluctant to replace them blind without some indication of their faultiness!

I'm convinced mined was due to the battery being run down. Once the battery was replaced or a battery re-conditioner was used to improve the battery, the problem went away.

For me the key to the problem was the shutdown of the electrics and only then the car loses engine power and coasts to a stop at low speed. Perhaps at that speed the alternator is not providing enough current to provide enough current to the Lights, A/C, Onboard computer etc. and the ignition system shuts down.

Re-charge (or better re-condition or replace) the battery and monitor it. Does the problem go away?
