Default Scraping noise

Hi got a 2005 V70 petrol auto....2.4 litre non turbo

Heard a scraping type noise on tickover... initially I thought it was the auxiliary belt tensioner...it could be sort of bearing noise... Though it wasn't always there

It was tonight though and louder than before...it didn't seem to be from the auxiliary belt area it sounded more like the cam cover top right hand side (near by that sensor on the end of the cam... position sensor/pickup?)

I thought I'd take off the oil filler cap off so I could hear more... Though as soon as I loosened the filler cap the noise stopped...... coincidence?? Or ....??

Any ideas?

Thanks

Default How to pin point the noise.....

Get a solid bar of something preferably metallic but definitely something dense and hold one end against you cupped ear and put the other end on various locations - you will soon locate the source of the noise. I used this to isolate my alternator pulley was knackered where it sounded more like the P/S pump. Let us know how you get on?

Could it be crankcase ventilation.... The PCV

If so, whereabouts is it

A diaphragm that splits?

Well there's definitely pressure in the crankcase..... Just need to pull out the dipstick with the engine running to see and hear

So I've taken to driving with the dipstick pulled out a bit..... Though obviously have got to repair this

I've seen YouTube clips where: people say it's turbo model problem only? And it can be done with just a replacement diaphragm with the ventilator box in situ

To me both points are wrong.... Any ideas??
