The 1.8 is more greedy, as it is a standard petrol car with no "futuristic" things. Port injection, no turbo, nothing to go wrong.

The 2.0d is torquey but on the other hand looses its "temper" at a higher speed and turns into something like a slug - AT HIGH SPEEDS.

Okay, the 1.8 has a short geared gearbox, so it revs higher and it is a quick accelerator but not as quick as the 2.0d. I'd have fun driving one, though it lacks my "rev-willingness" desire, found in the 2.0l

The gearing allows it to be driven at 30 mph in 5th gear and it is nice a quiet.

If you're looking for economy, take the 2.0d. If you're looking for revs, take the 1.8. If you want a smooth and quiet engine, take the 1.8l. If you want a "oompf" feeling, take the 2.0d.

I don't think the 1.8 will compare to 2.0D

I'd agree with T5, but if you only drive locally, then forgat any diesel and go for petrol.
