hi,i'me afraid there is none..not even in vida/vadis...thanks to mikealder he sent me this link(rough idea,...http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic...tall/.....just in case you need info on stripping things to get to the m56 gearbox out(pdf file)..from baffler i think....note if your m56 gearbox is same as mine, there is one hidden bolt at the back of the gearbox with a plate...Make sure you keep bolts in order on removal, as of course some are longer than others....i had to remove the bolts from the gearbox just to remove a damaged shim,my gears were fine, had to get a specialist to put the gearbox back together,as it is tight.and i sheared a bolt off...mmmmmm.note....i damaged the shim in the gearbox when trying to put the driveshaft back in.......and they are hard to get hold of.thanks to our dear friend gatos,he was able to supply 2 shims for me(i have one as a spare)...they are hard to get hold of on their own...neanderthal

Smile Does anybody still have this PDF

Hi

The link above no longer seems to work (I know it is old), but if anybody still has this PDF for the M56 gearbox I would be grateful for a copy please.

Thanks (hopefully)
Steve

On a (slight) side note, what other gearboxes ended up in x40s? Mine's an M56 and even though it's probably because I'm used to the car but it's one of the best gearboxes I've experienced for smoothness. Just feels like 5th should be a bit higher sometimes...

According to my Haynes the x40 1996 to 2004 used the following selection of manual gearboxes:-

M3P, M5P, M5D, M5M42/F5M45, M56

Of our current 3 V40s the 2 Sport sLux models have the M56 and the 1.8 GDI has the M5M42.

I would say that of the three the M5M42 has always been the slickest until it lost reverse about a month ago. Reverse decided not to engage at all, choosing to grind and jump out at any attempt to reverse. My local independent garage told me the gearbox was shot and would need replacing, but I found that by pulling on and holding the control levers under the bonnet my wife could engage reverse and move the car ok. As it only seemed to need about 2mm of extra ‘push’ on the linkage, as a ‘proof of concept’ I wedged some shim into the air gaps in the cable to control lever rubber bushing. It has been running ok all week now and is back to silky smooth, so I have rejected the suggestion that the gearbox is shot.
On further investigation I found a lot of give on the anti vibration rubber mounting for the cable sheaths in the engine bay. I have ordered a new mounting bracket for the cables from the local dealership (2 weeks wait from Sweden) in the expectation that this will ‘properly’ fix the problem.

My main daily drive (1.9D T3) has the M56 gearbox, and while it has never given me any problems (fingers crossed) it is not especially smooth.

The other V40 with the M56 was only purchased in the last month as it was advertised with 3rd/4th gear problems (hence so cheap it was worth it for spares even if dead). I found that this gearbox actually has a strange problem across all gears rather than being confined to just 3rd and 4th. I can easily change through the gears with no problems, so long as I pause the gearstick in neutral for about 1sec before selecting the next gear. If I try to speed through the gearbox it jams and/or crunches on every change. Seems like something in there is a bit sluggish?. Yesterday I changed the oil for the ‘proper Volvo stuff’, and it has helped but not fully resolved the problem. I have only done a couple of test miles, maybe a good run with nice oil may see further improvement? I also found a sloppy linkage bush between the cable end and gearbox control lever. It seems that the bush has a broken rubber join. In this case shimming it has not helped, and I am trying to find somewhere to source these rubber bushes. They are not listed as a part other than belonging to the cable in its entirety, so if I cannot buy one I will fabricate something.
If the pause-between-gear-changes symptom sounds familiar to anybody please chip in.

Regards
Steve

Now you mention it I do know what you mean about the delay, I've got used to it now but a few times when I hadn't had it long, I'd go to engage 3rd in particular and let the clutch back out, out of force of habit and it hadn't engaged, not a nice sound!

Used to driving transits in various states of 'used and abused' so an M56 is like a Rolls Royce in comparison
